Fred Rogers As Peaceful Neighbor Analysis
On a Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM, I attended a lecture at Leffler Chapel titled Fred Rogers as Peaceful Neighbor. My professor Dr. Long was lecturing the audience, took on a different title. He took on the title of Michael G. Long the author of Peaceful Neighbor. Michael Long was there to show us on how one man, Mister Rodgers, helped shape a more understanding culture. Dr. Long started off the lecture by telling the audience of a story about Fred Rogers as a Child. When Fred Rogers was a child he was over weight, insecure, and was bullied. To build he told us how his parents were really paranoid about young Fred getting kidnapped because their family had wealth growing up. Fred Rodgers did everything to make sure all his viewers felt like they belonged. Rodgers would respond to things happening in the world by using his show. When women were fighting for equality with men, Fred Rogers made the mayor of his neighborhood in the show a women. When African Americans were fighting fora civil rights, Rogers responded by making the sheriff in his neighborhood on the show a African American man. Rogers did countless acts behind the scenes of the show, due to the fact that he was an advocate for peace. In 2002, Fred Rogers was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. On top of all this Fred Rogers was also recognized as a Reverend by the Presbyterian Church. Fred Rogers was even willing to help people that no one else would help at that time. Officer Clemmons, who's real name is François Clemmons, opened up to Rodgers and admitted that he was a homosexual. Instead of treating Clemmons any differently Rogers gave Clemmons a hug and said “I like you just the way you are” Although Rogers never put a homosexual couple in the neighborhood, he never made officer Clemmons take out the earring on his right
