Across the world, there are many countries are studying and building research about fox with various purposes. Most of them are studying in order to investigate different aspects about foxes such as their lifestyle, behavior, ecology, physiology and also their role in the environment. Foxes can be found in most of northern hemisphere and geographical distribution from North America to Eurasia (Europe and Asia) and Australia.
The scientific name of red foxes, or foxes as they are commonly known, is Vulpes pulpes. They have a rather small-slender appearance, pointed ears and elongated muzzle. The coat is generally reddish, black on the back of the ears and the front of the legs, and white to grey on the throat and belly. But there are some cases that foxes are spotted with different color such as black foxes and cross foxes in North America and the reason why is because of genetic mutation. In general, foxes can live up to 14 years, comparable to dogs. But in the wild, foxes rarely live more than a couple of years since they are being hunted, especially in England.
Foxes belong to the dog family which including wolves, coyotes, grey foxes, raccoon dog and their relatives. They have the ability to quickly adapt and live in different habitats such as mountain regions, deserts, tundra and urban areas. This is the reason why they are successful in colonizing new environments and competing with other species. Because of this they are considered as a threat to many species such as amphibians, reptiles, birds and small mammals since they are small in size and easy to become the preys to foxes.
It’s believed that foxes live a solitary life which means they hunt and travel on their own. It doesn’t mean that they avoid other foxes but it’s just that they don’t do things together like others such as wolves. Meeting only happens during the mating season. After forming a pair, they travel, hunt and feed
