Mental illnesses has existed throughout history. Theories about mental illness depend on the culture, religious beliefs, and time period of the individual suffering from the mental illness. Four major theories of mental illnesses include being possessed by an evil spirits, genetic imbalances, inheritances, and dramatic life events (Farreras). According to the Mayo Clinic staff, a mental illness is “a wide range of mental health conditions [and] disorders that affect your mood, thinking, and behavior” (“Mental Illness”).
