Founders Day Essay
During Texas Southern University 85th years Founders Day Assembly I wasn’t able to hear all of what was said but from what I can hear I learned a lot of new things about my school that I didn’t know before. Texas Southern University was founded December 14, 1927. We haven’t always been Texas Southern University. Our school was first named Houston Colored Junior College from 1927 -1934, Houston College for Negroes 1934-1947, Texas State University for Negros from 1947-1951, then finally it became the great Texas Southern University from 1951- present. Texas Southern was the first HBCU in the state. In 1960 they had a Civil Rights Movement because a guy tried to go to UT, but was denied because of his race. June 1947 is when the Law School was established.

Reverend Ricky Georgetown opened the ceremony with a prayer. This was significant because Reverend Ricky roots are from Texas Southern. He went here from 92-96, is now a pastor at United Methodist Church. Texas Southern University “Ocean of Soul” Band Directed by Mr. Richard Lee performed the National Anthem after him.

Texas Southern Participates in 27% of pharmacist in Houston. Yolanda Adams is a millionaire, gospel singer, a judge on BET Sunday’s best, attended TSU. TSU is the first university to offer Doctor Degrees to Hispanics, Ranked 4th in the Nation. We are ranked 31st for Bachelor’s Degrees as well.

The Mayor of the city Denise Parker spoke at the Founders day as well. She acknowledges the four High Schools, Yates, Cashmere, Lee, and Wheatly. Yates High School is the closest to TSU. The main thing she told them to keep in mind, was that they not only in competition with the schools in the city. They were also in competition with the whole world. Houston is one of the cities who get looked at first. She also stated on how proud she was with TSU.

Brandon Andrews, President Student Government Association presented the Occasion. He was proud to say that Texas Southern University has been around for
