The perceptions of competence are held to be more fragile because competence is construed on the basis of what others have done or are doing and there is greater preoccupation with the adequacy of one’s ability (Duda and Hall, 2001, p 420). Youths who feel excessive pressure to win can perceive themselves as having poor abilities, feel unattached to their teams, and feel vulnerable in the presence of teammates (Cote, Deakin, and Fraser-Thomas, 2005). With respect to team unity, the heightened inter-individual comparison and rivalry among athletes undermine the sense that one is closely connected with others.
