Formal Features of "Remember by Christina Rossetti
“Remember” is a sonnet by a poetess of Victorian England, Christina Rossetti. The poem was written in 1849 but was first published in 1862 in “Goblin Market and Other Poems” by Rossetti (Petacovic, 2009). Rossetti suffered from ill health throughout her life (Shanks, 2010); she seemed to be obsessed with her death and therefore wrote several poems (“Song”, “The One Certainty”) exploring the theme of death. Christina Rossetti was only 19 when she wrote “Remember”. Scholars believe that the poem was addressed to her fiancé, Charles Cayley, though they later separated due to differing religious views. Written in iambic pentameter, “Remember” is a sonnet with Italian form. It is divided into an octet and a sestet. The octave (eight lines) rhymes ABBAABBA. As in most sonnets, the octet serves to set the theme of the narrative. The author seems to be informing the reader about her impending death. The sestet (six lines), on the other hand, has a rhyme scheme of CDDECE. This variation in rhyming scheme changes the atmosphere of the poem. The basic theme of the poem is that the narrator is asking to be remembered by her loved one but if her remembrance brings sorrow, she would rather be forgotten. Rossetti has employed simple words throughout the poem (Bennet, 2012). There are no visual details in the 14 lines. The author uses the phrase “remember me” three times in the first eight lines, almost demanding that she be remembered in certain situations. In the sestet the tone is very temperate. There is no use of imperatives. Instead, she states that it is better that her lover sometimes forget that she is gone and smile, rather than remember and be sad (Petacovic, 2009). Unlike most of Rossetti’s poems, such as “Winter: My Secret”, figurative language is used sparingly in the sonnet. There are three metaphors in this poem. The first metaphor is in verse 1, “Remember me when I am gone away”, where the words “gone away” are used instead of “dead”.

The poem “Richard Bone” by Edgar Lee Masters and the short story “Cats” by Anna Quindlen share a theme of how memory is imperfect. Both use a similar plot of having to deal with something that the protagonists don't enjoy yet are helplessly doing what they are told to do. Both Masters and Quindlen teach readers that though memories are neither perfect nor can be touched or seen, it is possible to replace them or fill in the gaps ourselves. Both texts explore a theme of how loneliness is at the core of memories through the examples of Richard Bone, the woman next door, and the essence of people’s personal lives.…

The human race is plagued with the curse of time. There is no way to avoid its unforgiving grip of which it holds every inhabitant of this planet. Each day as the clock ticks, our lives move on and we inch closer to possibly the scariest reality of our world, being forgotten. In E. B. White’s essay, Once More to the Lake, he delivers an underlying message of the power of a memory. As worldly possessions come and go, it remains impossible to take away a memory from someone. A weaker memory may be defiled and warped, but the true power lies within meaningful and clear memories which can stay with a person for the entirety of their life.…

Maybe she was 25 years of age; she was beautiful, attractive, and in addition a painter, the first painter I ever knew. I remember having heard that she had been engaged but after some time had broken the engagement; I remember that she was almost invariably in the company of her widowed father. As I remember him, he was an old, uninteresting, and rather unattractive man, or so I thought (maybe my judgment was somewhat biased by jealousy). Then one day I heard the shocking news: her father had died, and immediately afterwards, she had killed herself and left a will which stipulated that she wanted to be buried with her father. (p. 4)…

In Remember, the speaker is a dead person speaking to her beloved. "Remember me when I am gone away....into the silent land." The poem opens with the deceased asking her loved one to remember her when she enters the silent land, a metaphor for time after death and a relationship. Time is lost and relationships are severed when one dies. In the poem, the man wants to remember and mourn while the woman wants him to forget. "Better by far you should forget and smile than that you should remember and be sad." She would rather he moved on with his life and forget her instead of stopping his life and being overwhelmed with grief. In The Cross of Snow, the speaker is the survivor thinking of a deceased loved one. Longfellow uses words such as "long" and "sleepless" to demonstrate how life seemed to go by slower after the death of his beloved. He is unable to sleep, and remains awake in the room where his wife died, metaphor; he is bearing a cross of grief for his dead wife. "Eighteen year....seasons, changeless since the day she died." Longfellow explains how nothing is the same without his love. The seasons seem to blend together and everything seems pointless. Rossetti's poem has a more secular view, while Longfellow's is more Christian. Longfellow uses imagery that relates to Jesus, such as the "cross of snow," which represents…

Such thoughts can be examined in paragraph seven announcing, “that is what it was to me,” and “that was how it felt to me…” when Didion further explains that it doesn’t matter how precisely a memory is remembered, as long as there’s still something to hold onto. The repetitive thoughts that foreshadow are embedded in this section of the text in order to illuminate the author’s third point of the paper: how it felt to me. Through repetitive thoughts the author incorporates a sentimental tone which evokes the readers to further ponder Didion’s third point and try to remember memories from the…

The textual form of the poetry of Denise Levertov and the recount Pure Torture by Tom Moe has shaped the reader’s understanding of history and memory to a great extent. While history is represented generally as objective, impersonal, factual and static, memory is represented as subjective, personal, fragmented and fluid. Techniques applied by the composers are consistent with forging these representations. A close examination of the texts indicates that history and memory are distinct concepts, but they are also two elements which work together in an interdependent relationship to make a record of truth.…

“A Red, Red Rose”, written by Robert Burns, is a romantic lyric poem that describes the affection that the narrator has for his love. In the poem, similes pertaining to his love are used to convey how deeply he feels about it, and to show that he is being sincere in his words. In the last two stanzas, the narrator states that his love will prevail until the end of time, or for as long as he lives. He also states that he’d still return to his love, even if he had to walk ten thousand miles, meaning that he would do anything or go anywhere for her.…
