Formal Analysis: Forest Monarch- Reynold Weidenaar
Forest Monarch, a watercolor painting by Reynold Weidenaar is one of the pieces of art hanging on the walls of the Art and Music Library in the second floor of Funderburg library. The painting consists of a massive tree as a backdrop and has a man facing the tree, turning his back towards the audience. The tree in the painting may be an oak tree. Generally, an oak tree is considered to be the king of the forest. The title of the painting is Forest Monarch, suggesting that the tree in the painting is an Oak tree. The man in the painting is carrying a gun which provides a hint that he might have been a hunter looking for a prey around the tree. Two contrasting ideas of peace and violence are presented together in the painting. On one hand, there is a huge calm tree firmly standing in a stationary position while on the other hand, there is an active man facing the calm tree with a gun. The calmness provided by the tree can end within the next few seconds if the man decides to use his gun.
The focus of the painting-the tree- is located in the center of the painting while the man is at the bottom left corner of the painting. Such positioning allows viewers to first recognize the tree which is the main focus of the painting upon looking at the painting. Although the tree catches the viewer’s attention first, the painter has made an effort to make the man stand out so that the viewers do not miss to see him. The painter does this by making the man wear bright colored clothes. The man’s clothes are blue and red as opposed to brown and gray. Dull dark colors like brown and gray would not have made the man as obvious as he is now. In addition to the colors used in the man’s clothes, the painter has also used color as a means of portraying the time. The light brownish, orange and yellowish background suggests that it is that time of the day when the sun is just about to

Christina’s World is a painting set in 1948 by American painter Andrew Wyeth, and one of the best known paintings from the late 20th century. It illustrates a woman lying on the ground in a treeless, mostly orangey field, looking up at a gray house on the horizon with barns and small sheds across from the house. The young woman in the painting is Anna Christina Olson. It is said she suffered from polio (a muscular deterioration) that paralyzed her from the waist down. Wyeth had a summer home close to Christina’s and was inspired to draw the painting after he saw her crawling through the field of her home. The painting’s wasted limbs and pink dress belong to Christina Olson. The youthful head and torso belong to Betsy Wyeth (Andrew Wyeth’s wife) who was then in her mid-20s. Although Olson was the inspiration and subject of the painting, she was not the primary ideal.…

The painting, The Jack Pine, by Tom Thomson is an oil on canvas was created in 1916-1917. Its measurements are 127.9 x 139.8 cm. The Jack Pine is displayed in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Tom Thomson's work shows the influence of Impressionism, Art Nouveau, and the achievements of the Group of Seven. The Jack Pine creates a calm, distilled outlook on the Canadian landscapes. I like how Thomson uses almost every colour in the rainbow. The sky and the lake are the same colour generate a still, tranquil, and placid. There is a strong contrast between the background and the tree. The scene looks like there was a big wind storm that had just passed through and now everything is relaxed and clearing up. There is a red undertone that compliments the complimentary colours. Thomson applies the paint on thick and in a similar way. The brushstrokes are all horizontal making it easy for the eye to look at. The tree not centered in the middle of the page, establishes a unique view and a non-perfect look at a landscape. The twiggy branches that dangle down, as well as the tree trunk produce a perpendicularity to the horizontal mountains, sky, and water. The shapes are pretty simple in this painting, making it have a comfortable sense.…

The pieces Ann Whitley Russell, done by an unknown artist in around 1820 and Lady Frances Knowles, also done by an unknown artist, in the mid-late 17th century are both examples of portraits that portray the sitters in diverse yet insightful ways to viewers. Both Ann Whitley Russell and Lady Frances Knowles are works of art composed of oil paint on canvas. Although these portraits are different, the aspects of space, color, and composition are all important elements that must be considered while comparing the woman in these two pieces.…

The painting I chose to do is called “Landscape With Willows”. This portrait is made by Alexander Young Jackson (A.Y. Jackson). To make this painting Jackson travelled to Quebec and sketched the image out. Then, he returned and made his rough sketch into a painting. To show his painting as a spring/summer day. He used different shades of neutral colours such as green, blue, yellow and some red. The painting looks like a plain field with some trees in the middle and in the background. There is not a lot of detailed paint work done besides on the trees in the middle and the fence to the side. The painting looks simple and plain because of the colours and the design used.…

The focused elements used in Portrait de Paul Eluard (fig. 3) are color, value, and texture. The color of the sky is a calming blue that fades to white which contrasts the chaos going on in the foreground portrait. The green color of the monster puts an emphasis on it, while the other colors are more neutral and faded. Value is shown in the shading created in most the objects to create a three-dimensional work. One can also visualize…

The important concept that I picked up on was that though all of these varied views are put onto a tree that the artist’s perspectives and individualistic views are what are important. By the creativity behind how the artists pushed the bounds of how a tree is normally perceived and instead viewed the tree in a way that is more connected to them then how the tree’s appearance actually appeared. By the views in which a person may look at the tree and draw it for the exact appearance in comparison to how a majority of artists may look at the tree and see something else. Personal expression is prevailing in the way that it separates what is and a fresh and innovative look into the expansive amount of imaginative ideas that can inspire new ways in which to perceive objective objects.…

Manet composes the painting in such a way that the subject matter and general acquisition of mood are addressed immediately. The mood seems controversially relaxed at once due to the casual seating of the men despite their formal wear, as well as being sat with a nude woman – a rare sight as her clothes are messily in a heap at the front right part of the picture. Any potential visual imbalance is countered by the space towards the back right of the picture, despite it appearing there are more elements on the left side of the picture. The picture is further balanced by the lines of trees, creating two rows back into the distance, and the river being at the centre of the photo harmonises the sense of balance. Not only do the trees suggest equality, but they direct the eyes toward the centre of the photo where the three people sit in conversation; the absence of a near tree on the right hand side is made up for by the man in black, who points the eye towards the naked lady in the middle. The colours are more detailed towards the front of the painting, and there is also a clear contrast between defined figure and more lax flowing ground throughout the painting. The real contrast in colour is from foreground to back, as the foreground has more blacks (although it seems no darker) whereas the background is lighter; this suggests a sense of recession in light intensity as the front is surrounded by trees whereas towards the back there is more space, therefore appearing lighter. Manet uses various techniques to create space and depth, as well as his variation of light and dark colours. The trees become smaller as they go towards the difference, and their trunks become less defined suggesting they are out of the immediate sight of the painter…

The landscape being depicted becomes a metaphor for reality in itself. It creates the sense of nature because of the composition of the window with a balcony, but the landscape is completely different from traditional views. He uses colors that are manifestly not the natural color that is actually seen in everyday light . He uses the idea of using complementary colors that creates the illusion of the colors jumping forward on the canvas. Some said the colors used by these fauvist artists were like “sticks of dynamite” .…

    Understanding Art

Art is something which can be analyzed to give deeper insight as to the common values and beliefs shared by the members of a certain society. Regardless of the place of origin or the time period of a form of art, it will always be a reflection of the social structure in which it's creator/s lived. However, the way the artist perceives the culture common to his time period is very relative. People pertaining to a higher social class had different values and ideologies than members of a lower class. This different view of life can be seen very clearly in individual forms of art such as painting and music. These specific forms of artistic expression required very little money, thus could be exercised by anyone including members of a lower class. Other forms of art such as architecture and sculpture required more money and in most cases wealthy patrons such as kings or queens. Architecture also required large numbers of workers which often made it hard to see any individual influence in the design, however showed the collective ideology of all of the people involved. The cost of labor and materials was also so great that very affluent members of society were needed to financially support the whole process. Sculpture was also an artistry that required great amounts of material and labor. This resulted in a more normative form of art which portrayed societal aspects in a way that was of interest to the financial backers. By studying both popular and normative art together it is possible to obtain a greater perspective on a specific culture. Outside influences from other countries can also affect the art and the artists of a certain society. As a country sees more and more immigrants from a certain area, the art will begin to reflect the ideologies these outsiders bring in with them. This same change can be seen more drastically in the case of an invasion. The architecture would change drastically, since it is normative art and the new rulers would enforce their…

When first glancing at the painting, most of the attention is grabbed by the fair composition of the character that is “Eve”. She appears to be glowing in contrast to the darkness of rest of the painting. It appears as though the light source is shining from beyond the right side of the painting, as Eve, part of the tree in the foreground, and the visible parts of “death”, or “Adam” are illuminated. The background, however is shrouded with darker colours, only few shapes and lines are visible giving the representation of dense shrubbery occupying the background. There is some shading used on Eve’s body parts, but not as dramatic as the shading of the tree, which almost has a half-dark, half-light appearance.…
