The movie “Forks over Knives” is one that every person must get a chance to see. The title means one thing, and that is to eat right. One must eat right in order to stay healthy. In the beginning of the movie, a quote by ancient doctor Hippocrates was read and shown for everyone to read. The quote was, “Let food be thy medicine” (Hippocrates). A person with no health knowledge might think that this quote is crazy because they live in a society where food is thought to only do the body harm. It is true that food can be one’s body’s worst enemy. However, it can also be the body’s best friend; the right foods that is. Eating healthy foods keeps one away from the doctor as long as they continue to do so. Eating things that is not good for one’s body excessively has a lot of negative consequences. The cover for the movie and the book “Forks over Knives” shows a hand holding a fork at the top. At the bottom of the cover was a picture of a knife, but not the eating kind, it is a picture of a scalpel. The photo of the fork symbolizes food, and the scalpel symbolizes medical procedures; procedures that a person would never wish on themselves. When people eat unhealthy goods, they are putting themselves at risk. Eating bad comes with many different consequences, some reversible, and some that are not. Some diseases that people can get from eating unhealthy foods on a daily basis are, type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease, asthma, obesity, high blood pressure; and that’s just to name a few. Eating bad forces one to have to depend on “the scalpel.” Some may think that the only foods that are bad for one’s health are junk foods such as candy, sodas, chips, cookies, or just anything thing loaded with sugar or salt. All of these things are bad for the body, but they are not the only ones. Foods that are unhealthy are foods that are processed. Examples of processed foods are meats, dairy products, and fast food. It is ok for one to eat processed foods once in a while but it is a bad idea to eat them one a daily basis. Processed foods are dangerous for one’s health when abused. If a person wants to be sure that they’ll live a long and physically happy life, they should make whole foods a part of their daily routine. Whole foods are foods that have been grown from the earth. Whole foods have the power to prevent diseases, and some has the power to reverse some health issues. Some sorts of whole foods are beans, rice, wheat, oat meal, veggies, fruits and many more. The more whole foods a person eats, the farther they are from ever needing to go to the doctor’s office. The title “Forks over Knives” is definitely stating something very important that we should know in order to stay healthy. When it comes to being and staying healthy, food is the body’s best weapon. Eat right and one would never have to see a doctor.

    Food has become an addiction to these people, as they depend on food to pleasure them. This is known as dopamine, it reacts as our brain is telling them to continue that pleasure, in this case to keep eating. Two of the people we saw in the movie had to be hospitalized. One man was eating almost 14 thousand calories per day. That is what an average person should be eating in two weeks. But this addiction is leading their lives to death. As professor Dulai mentioned in lecture, an individual should maintain a healthy diet. This means having small portions, making half of our plates fruits and vegetables and having different “colors” in our meal. When watching these films, the main foods these individuals would intake is fried foods, candy, cookies, soda, and overall greasy foods.     The Op-Ed piece, “Don’t Blame the Eater,” by David Zinczenko talks about the issue of obesity in America and whose fault it really is, the eater or the people providing the food. His claim on the subject is that it is the industries fault for the obesity in America and not the peoples fault because finding an alternative to eating cheap food on the go is nearly impossible. He makes an example of himself right in the third paragraph, explaining how his mom had to work long hours to pay the bills and his choices for food were pizza hut or KFC because that was the only affordable choice for him. He also employs a lot of logos in the following paragraphs by mentioning statistics on the matter of diabetes, and the amount of money put into treating it as the years progress. Shooting down opposing arguments also plays a factor in Zinczenko’s essay when he asks the reader “shouldn’t we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast-food restaurants?” He states that this is one argument, but then makes the point of where are consumers, particularly teenagers, supposed to find alternatives. He also introduces the concept of not knowing any information on the food that we are consuming, and the misleading advertising in fast food products where certain “healthy foods” are really just masked by misleading serving sizes and lack of dressing and noodles and almonds for say a healthy salad. I believe he sums up his essay by saying that the companies should be sued for not having these warning labels the same way tobacco companies are.     In the book, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, author Michael Pollan commences his tale with a few straightforward words: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants”. In his introduction, An Eater’s Manifesto, Pollan discusses how the dietetic wisdom that was passed down from older generations has been heavily tainted by “nutritional science and food industry marketing” (Pollan, 2008). The first volume of the book entitled, The Age of Nutritionism”, delves into this problem and helps uncover the cause of today’s “nutritional confusion and anxiety” (Pollan, 2008). Nowadays, it is not uncommon to have “edible foodlike substances” displayed in every aisle of the grocery store with all products promoting some kind of nutritional benefit from their consumption. These dietary facts are often modified to showcase dietary benefits that are barely present in the food product, if present at all. With such prevalent misinformation, today’s society has become so overly concerned with nutrient enriched food that people have either forgotten or are unaware of the importance of the fundamentals. Pollan further explains that humanity has become “a nation of orthorexics” meaning that people have developed “an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating” centred on the theory of nutritionism (Pollan, 2008). Chronic diseases that have the highest death rate such as obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer, can be attributed to the “Western diet” which consists of “highly processed foods and refined grains; the use of chemicals to raise plants and animals in huge monocultures; the superabundance of cheap calories of sugar and fat produced by modern agriculture; and the narrowing of the biological diversity of the human diet to a tiny handful of staple crops, notably wheat, corn, and soy” (Pollan, 2008).
