Pre-Production Report
For my project I am producing two front covers and two double page spreads for a music magazine titled ‘Volume.’ The sub-genre is a rock metal music magazine. The content I will include will be an interview and an album review. The style of one of my front covers will be a colour scheme of red and pink and the other cover will consist of the colours blue and purple.
For my secondary research I have analysed two magazines of the same genre, including Rock Sound and Kerrang. I have chosen these magazines because they are the same genre of magazine in creating and they are also bold and creative. On the November edition of the Kerrang magazine the key signifier is a medium close-up shot of musician and role model Oli Sykes. The encoder has used eye contact to create a direct mode of address with the decoder. It makes the model look seductive and attractive, which appeals to the target audience who are people in groups E and D on the demographic scale. The mise en scene used on the image such as his tattoos anchors the rock genre of this magazine.
The encoder has constructed the front cover using bright colours such as orange and red, which contrast with the black and white background to make it stand out on the shelves, so the audience are more likely to see it. Also the use of bold colours appeals to the target audience of teenagers. The edgy, capitalised, sans serif typeface of the masthead is partly covered by the key signifier, this connotes that this magazine is a well-known brand which is recognisable.
A pull quote has been used as the cover line saying ‘I want to make people happy…’ this overlaps the image of Oli Sykes and this creates an enigma for the decoder, as they will want to read the article that it is referring to. The big, bold, capitalised font style used on the headline ‘Bring me the Horizon’ overlaps the image. Also, the words ‘me’ and ‘the’ are written in a Japanese style font, anchoring the cover line ‘in Tokyo with
