Forensic Pathology

Since the late 1980’s technology has been rapidly advancing on earth. From the development of computers to 3D printers, technology has aided many professions throughout the years. In the world of medicine, technology has aided physicians, nurses, and surgeons tremendously with the inventions of MRI machines, more accurate medication, and now, artificial organs can be created to replace vital organs that are no longer able to properly function. With the fear of technology taking over different fields, the world of medicine is at a less risk than those in retail and mechanics. Their main job is to determine the cause and manner of death of the person and be able to possible present it before a jury (“Forensic”). They must also be able to diagnose the mechanism of death to explain why the person is no longer able to live. There are also clinical forensic pathologist who work with living patients who have experienced sexual assault or abuse. Though it is more commonly for forensic pathologist to be working with patients once they are no longer living. Forensic pathology is an extremely hard field to get into, due to the limiting number of positions around the country. Unlike some doctors, some forensic pathologist have to be voted into the position if they are planning on working in smaller counties. Anders Persson has created what is known as the “Virtopsy Table” (Navalkar). This table allows pathologist to freely examine the 3D image that was created with the help of the virtobot and virtopsy. The table uses a “large touch sensitive liquid-crystal-display (LCD) screen” to display the image clearly. The pathologist is then able to perform the “autopsy” on the 3D image with their finger. They are able to use their finger to look through the layers of the skin and examine the organs. This creation not only helps forensic pathologist to perform more accurate autopsies, but also helps to limit the damage they cause to the body.
