Ford Pinto Case
If we were involved in the Ford Pinto dilemma we would have used Deontological Ethical reasoning to decide whether or not to disclose the danger that the Pinto posed and/or use that reasoning to determine whether or not to install the part(s) that would make the Ford Pinto safer. Our decision would be to do what is morally right and avoid doing what is morally wrong, regardless of the consequences. True enough Ford was not obligated by government regulation or any law, to disclose the potential hazards of the Ford Pinto however; at the least they should have presented the option of purchasing the part to make the care safer - an option we would have made available to the customer.
It is apparent Ford use the Utilitarian Ethical approach to come to their decision – choosing to do what produced the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people; a subcompact car that cost $2,000 and weighing no more than 2,000 pounds (Ford & Newton, 2008, p. 296), sold to 11 million customers as opposed to the only 180 people who lost their lives! Valuing a human life at $200,000 against a part that if individually purchased cost $11, Ford felt that it was less expensive to settle fatality claims at $200,000 per life – so they thought, until jury’s started awarding multi-million settlements – so much for their cost-benefit analysis.

When a person comes to a conclusion on a decision, many times there are influences from outside sources that impact the choices made. In this case it is the lack of caring about human life, death and suffering. If you fall into that category, society looks upon you with the utmost contempt.
People have generally accepted that death is a natural part of the human cycle. The problem is that people usually come to easier terms with death when people die of “natural causes” and have lived a long and fulfilling life.     Three social issues that are in this case are that one, social issue in this case was Ford claimed the reason for the recall of the 1.9 million Ford Pintos was not for safety but for “reputational” reasons. This is a social issue because, after all the evidence was piled up on their company for being unsafe and hazardous, they couldn’t just admit they made a mistake and recall the vehicles to make them safer. No, they had to use the reputation card to help their company’s image in the long run so they wouldn’t lose profit. In this issue, there is no utilitarianism because there mindset in making this decision isn’t for the right reasons. There not doing it to intentionally increase the safety of everybody. One version, rule-utilitarianism, considers that, “a rule or code of behavior is morally right if, by its application, the consequences are more favorable that unfavorable to everyone.” They weren’t being moral when they made this decision. The citizens and people had nothing to do with the recall. It was their own self-pity and arrogance. Another social issue in this case is that in June of 1978, Ford knew that its fuel tank did not meet Federal Safety Standards, yet they didn’t do anything to warn the owners of this. It’s a fact that if people were warned of this issue, thousands and thousands of people wouldn’t want to buy the Ford Pinto. Being that this was a social issue, Ford was all about making a profit and hid crucial information for the public.     Ethics can be seen as an understanding of the nature of dilemmas that arise from imperatives human beings hold as moral agents. It serves as a guide to how best we may deal with conflicts in regard to duties and obligations or with potential outcome. The ethical theory of act-utilitarianism places the locus of right and wrong solely on the consequence of choosing one path of action over another as it weighs a ratio of benefit to harm. Thus, the moral act would be the one that brings about the most positive result. On the other hand, the theory of deontology focuses on an autonomous adherence to moral obligations and duties; defining the right act as one that lives up to moral standard, regardless of the nature of outcome. Now, consider the case of Sidney Farber’s creation of Jimmy’s Fund, a children’s cancer research fund. This situation deals with public deception as Farber changed the name of his charity’s face from Einar Gustafson to Jimmy and neglected to use his last name. Despite this fact however, the charity managed to raise more than $231,000 and set the foundation for future research funding campaigns (Mukherjee 99). When viewed through a utilitarian standpoint, the public’s deception is disregarded as the end benefit outweighs the harm. This act, however, is not justified through deontology due to the fact that the standard of lying as wrong was violated, thus the ends of the action do not justify the means. The act-utilitarianism account is superior because, unlike deontology, it provides within itself an empirical solution to ethical dilemma as long as there is an equal consideration of all interest in the balance of potential benefit and harm.…
