Football Too Dangerous
Are sports too dangerous? Sports are fun, but they are also very dangerous at times. Let's take Football for example. Football is one of America’s most important sports, but it is also one of the most dangerous sport ever. People see the fun and thrill of the game, but what they don't see is how much people get hurt in them. Football players are a magnet to head injuries, hard hits, concussions mostly and many other death leading damage. All of these injuries and situations leading to death shows you that it is a good idea for schools and recreation departments to start eliminating football programs because of safety issues.

An Article by "Hard Knocks" By Gabriel Charles Tyler states that “The National Football League (NFL) for years denied there was a link between the sport and brain damage, but in 2009, it acknowledged publicly for the first time that concussions suffered while playing football can lead to long-term negative health effects. Last year, the NFL revealed that it expects nearly a third of retired players to develop permanent brain impairments.” This quote shows just how dangerous football is. This is important since it shows how many players get frequently injured playing football, and a handful of them with permanent brain injuries. This can not

Drew interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta about the "Concussion Hazards in Youth Football", shows Dr. Sanjay talking about the dangers of football, and how they are caused. A quote from the video states that “Approximately 3.8 million concussions occur each year in sports, such as football.” This quote shows the major amount of people who get concussions over the point of a year. Just a year. This is very crucial since if school, and recreational departments continue to keep these dangerous sports, then just imagine what that number would be in the future. The number of concussions per year is 3.8 million. In the near future that could be the number for just 6 months. Football has to be

Doctors proved that, “Recent studies have shown that head injuries sustained by NFL players can eventually lead to debilitating, chronic brain diseases such as dementia” (“NFL Head Injuries). This is a problem because the NFL isn’t doing enough to protect their players. Yes, the players do provide entertainment for everyone, but if the NFL keeps being careless many franchise players won’t be able to play. NFL players should be better protected by the NFL so players don’t develop brain disease, and won’t have to get sidelined during games due to concussions. Doctors researched and found out that, “A total of 87 out of 91 former NFL players have tested positive for the brain disease” (“FRONTLINE”). This shows that the NFL doesn’t protect their players enough. Only 4 former NFL players out of 91 weren’t diagnosed with concussions. The NFL needs to take better care of players so this doesn’t happen as often. Although brain diseases due to concussions are a tremendous problem, one thing that is much worse than that is a player's chances of getting another concussion. Once a player suffers their first concussions they are more likely to develop a concussion. “Studies show, after the first concussion, the athlete is four times more likely to suffer another” (“Concussions in Sports”). This is very important because as players get more and more concussions. Eventually they will develop permanent brain damage or they…

From my knowledge about football, I do think that football is dangerous for high school players. There are studies done that have proven there are more high school players getting hurt then the college players. “According to the study, published in the August 2007 issue of The American Journal of Sports Medicine, four out of every 1,000 high school football exposures resulted in an injury, while eight out of every 1,000 collegiate football exposures in an injury.” In a way, high school football players tend to get injured easier because they are not fully developed like the adults. Their tissues are not as strong as the collegiates & their brain isn’t fully developed either. In that case, too much hits on the head can seriously injure them.…

At every level of football, there are inherent dangers that come with playing the game. These dangers are understood and assumed by all participants, and though the game is more safe than it has ever been, there are still risks that are ever present during a football game. When I played football I understood those risks, and the danger of the game is one of the reasons why I waited until 8th grade to start playing. While I was able to avoid any serious injuries over my five year career, the thought of possible injury caused many of my friends to decide that playing football was not worth the risks. Now while high school football in Connecticut is much different than the level of football that Chris Boreland was playing at, his thinking was…
