Narrative Essay
A narrative essay is the story of a significant or memorable event in your life. A narrative should include specific details, descriptions, and perhaps even dialogue. A narrative is a story told from your perspective that includes not only a narration of the event, but also an evaluation of this event. For this essay, I want you to focus on food as the guiding theme behind your narrative. In order to write this essay, please consider some of the following questions:
1) What is your food story?
2) What role does food play in your gatherings with family and friends?
3) How much does your culture influence what/how you eat?
4) Are there recipes that are particularly significant to you? Why? Where did you get them?
5) What is your most significant memory involving food?
6) How does food affect other aspects of your life?
The essay will be graded on the following criteria: 1. ASSIGNMENT FULFILLMENT (Basic Elements): Is the essay 2-4 typed, double-spaced pages? Does the title introduce the subject of the narrative? Is this work a clear-cut narrative with a proper timeline? Is it formatted properly (page numbers, MLA manuscript form)?
2. CONTENT (Hook, pacing, conclusion): Does the introduction have a good hook, one that captures the reader's interest? Is the essay's narrative pacing o.k.- neither too fast nor excessively slow? Does the conclusion wrap-up the essay effectively, providing a revelation or a moral?
3. MORAL: Was the moral lesson (established in the conclusion or throughout the essay) clear? Was it well-expressed?
4. DESCRIPTION: Did you include enough sensory images? Were these images richly detailed to the fullest extent possible? Do you include several differing action verbs?
5. ORGANIZATION/MECHANICS: Is the essay organized well, using a chronological, spatial, or ideological pattern? Does it use transitions that promote fluidity between paragraphs?
6. DIALOGUE: Does the essay employ

Food is an essential part of our lives. We consume it every day and absolutely need it to live and thrive successfully. With something so significant to us, why should we risk the source of where our food comes from? Robert Kenner created a powerhouse documentary film called Food Inc. that gives an accurate description of the horrible realities of corporate farming by providing evidence of the harm affecting both humans and animals. Robert Kenner is a film director and producer. Kenner claims that today; food can be potentially harmful to the health of any consumer and the process of creating certain foods is detrimental to the lives of the animals and humans involved in the procedure. Kenner demonstrates his argument by using the effect of pathos, exemplification, and imagery. Pathos in this film displays a depressing feel to the documentary to appeal to the emotional aspect of viewers. Pathos is represented through the size and living conditions of chickens at Tyson farms and the death of a child named Kevin by E. coli poisoning. Exemplification is used by Kenner to display examples of Kenner’s argument and how they relate to each claim. Exemplification is seen through the versatility of corn and result of cows that have been fed corn. Imagery is important to this film because it leaves a descriptive representation of the concepts, making them more understandable. Imagery is effective to the tone of the movie, especially in scenes such as the living conditions of the chickens, how much manure is involved with cows in the slaughterhouse, and the conditions of workers in the Smithfield slaughterhouse.…

The four types of essay organization discussed in the course readings are expository, persuasive, analytical and argumentative. The characteristics that make the essays that I read expository are both provided evidence, examples and facts to inform about the topic with a thesis statement as its base. The information was also presented fairly and in a nonbiased manner. For example, in the essay titled “How to Succeed as an Online Student”, it informed me as the reader that to master time management I had to first determine what time of the day that I was most focused on my studies. Then it went on to explain to me how I could manage my time wisely.…
