Food Insecurity Among Freshmen
When considering everyday life amongst college students, many would acknowledge the financial difficulties they may encounter. However, when attempting to understand these financial difficulties, society can only contemplate so far. Amongst college students food insecurity is an everyday challenge, which can interfere with educational and financial habits. The significance of this research paper is to evaluate food insecurity amongst upper and underclassmen. This is considered a problem due to the affect it can have on the livelihood of these everyday students.
There are multiple factors that can contribute to food insecurity amongst freshmen. These factors include high tuition and housing costs. Due to the research we have conducted in my Scopes and Methods class, surveys shows that freshmen had a higher chance of food insecurity by 43% amongst all classifications. Seniors tend to focus more on upcoming graduation and possible job opportunities; however these opportunities may come at a cost, which Anderson confirms by conveying how, “Public colleges expect students in those circumstances to take out loans to help finance their education,” (Anderson 2016). When considering the ending of college for seniors many fail to acknowledge the increase of economic demand to sustain them as college students. This demand can cause seniors, even if finishing college to encounter food insecurity and others such as housing insecurity. Some seniors tend to go back home to parents due to the lack of financial and job resources. Without a home and food graduates, have a high chance of straying toward food and housing insecurities.
