Table 1 and Graph 1 show that only 40% of the fruit and vegetables only contained chemical preservatives. One of the items of food was banana chips, this product contains Sulphur Dioxide. According to H.A. Steinman, M le Roux and P.C. Potter, Sulphur Dioxide enhances a persons asthma. Only 4 items from the table contained preservatives whereas 6 did not. Not many fruits and vegetables contain preservatives simply because they come from nature. One of the items contained Sodium Benzoate, a small percentage of people are extremely sensitive to sodium benzoate and can experience asthmatic attacks and other allergic reactions when they take in the preservative. A more normal problem is the combination of sodium benzoate and citric acid and ascorbic acid. When these ingredients mix, they form benzene, a cancer-causing chemical linked with leukemia and other blood cancers.( Deborah Mitchell, 2016 )…

All required label statements are to be placed on the front of the item, non required material by the FDA is called intervening material, which is not illegal but is just something extra that the maker of the product wants buyers to know about the product. Food labels must have name and address of the maker of the product, city and state, zip code, and packager or distributor. There also must be an ingredient lost on the food item, this is the order of each and every ingredient included in the food item. Even water is supposed to be added on the ingredients list. The average American eats about 1,996.3 pounds of food per year (Credit Loan). Just what exactly is it that they are eating? Between additives, pesticides that are sprayed onto fruits and vegetables, hormones that are given to cows, and the amount of pollution in water, the foods that people eat everyday may not be as safe as some would think. Even simple drinking water has been contaminated by illicit drugs, medicinal drugs, and hormones (National Geographic). Additives also cause a concern when it comes to consumers. Those hard-to-pronounce chemicals that are in the list of ingredients on the label are used for more than just flavoring, appearance, and preserving the food (Food Additives). Those additives are used in some other very harsh items such as bug repellent (Food Additives). However, there are some simple and sustainable options that can help consumers avoid running into harsh chemicals and additives that may be lurking in their food. These changes will not only help them make healthier and safer choices, but also help them to save some money in the long run. Many unanswered questions will be addressed within this paper such as: What are the hormones in some of the foods such as dairy and meat and what exactly are they used for? How do they affect us? What can consumers do to avoid purchasing these items? How can one avoid unsafe drinking water and are additives really that bad?…

Food is all around us and is necessary for everyday survival. Yet it has become so different from what it used to be. With the developing of new technologies, transportation and a growing population we require food to last longer. Have you ever wondered why maybe the apple you eat is so deeply colored red, or perhaps why the food in chain restaurants manage to produce so much food, yet have it all taste the same? Many people don’t consider this, they put trust into food producers and marketers to tell them the truth and serve up healthy and safe food. Yet this is not the truth, food which was once a necessity is now a business. Yet what are the health dangers of these new “brands” of food, and what will the future hold for food? And how is the use of food preservatives affects this all?…
