WRITING A REFLECTIVE ESSAY
During your 4 weeks clinical placement, select a clinical event or experience upon which you will reflect.
You are expected to:
Select and state the model of reflection you will follow. In this assignment, I suggest you to use Gibb’s Reflective Cycle Model.
Structure your essay according to the sections of the model.
Place a copy of the model within the appendix.
HOW TO WRITE A REFLECTIVE ESSAY
The use of the first person
Generally work should be submitted written in the neutral third person, for example ‘It has been argued that …’ or ‘The writer would suggest that…’ However, this might be inappropriate for reflective writing which may require a personal approach, for example, ‘In this situation I felt …’

How to structure an essay
Introduction
Each piece of work should begin with an introduction. In your reflective essay, the introduction should able to answer the four basic questions:
What is the essay about?
What exactly does the essay focus on?
Why is it important to analyse this?
How relevant it is to your practice. You should use the evidence from the literature to support your statement
How will the issues identified be developed?
Apart from the information provided by the answers to the above questions, your introduction may also need to include:
Definitions of terms. When you use terms that are unfamiliar or controversial, you will need to define exactly how you will use them.
Reference to models. In the case of the reflective essay, you may need to state the model of reflection (e.g. Gibbs, 1988) you will follow.
