Running head: TO FOLLOW CHRIST OR NOT TO FOLLOW CHRIST

To Follow Christ or To Not Follow Christ, That Is the Question
Eric Doss
EN 1320 M2
Abstract
Being a follower of Christ is a choice made by faith; we have the choice to be saved or unsaved. The Bible says “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life that both you and your seed may live” (Deut 30:19, King James Version).TO FOLLOW CHRIST OR NOT TO FOLLOW CHRIST, THAT IS THE QUESTION
One of the most talked about subjects in today’s time is being a follower of Jesus Christ! The choice to be a follower of Christ is a choice that must be made by faith, believing that Christ died for our sins, and he will give us our salvation. There are too many painstaking debates whether Christ is real or not, but that isn’t up for debate. This choice is to weigh the pros & cons of being a follower of Christ. Pros of Following Christ
To get a better understanding of the pros of following Christ, one must understand the expectations of making the choice to follow Christ. The pros of following Christ are that you are born again, you will gain your salvation and eternal life, and you will be baptized in Jesus’ name and filled with the Holy Ghost, with the evidence of speaking in tongues. The ultimate benefit of following Christ is that as long as you stay faithful to Christ and fulfill his will while on earth, you will be granted access to dwell in the kingdom of heaven when Christ calls you home. The bible illustrates the idea of Jesus saying “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matt 16:24, King James Version), meaning if a man decides to follow Christ, let him put away the old things he loved to do in the world, completely follow Christ, and be faithful to him over everything he requires.

Cons of Following Christ In retrospect, there aren’t any cons when following Christ. When you are 100% faithful to following Christ, there

References: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live”(Deut. 30:19, King James Version). “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matt 16:24, King James Version). “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Tim 1:7, King James Version).

Be able to confirm or deny if the following statement is accurate (According to Gutierrez - Preface), “Only after you acknowledge that Jesus Christ is indeed the incarnate God Himself, that He lived a sinless life, that Jesus Christ’s death on the cross is the only sacrifice that is able to provide a payment for your sins, and that Jesus Christ physically rose from the dead in bodily form, and repent of your sins and ask Jesus Christ to save you from your sin and to be your Savior – THEN, will you be able to receive the benefit of being able to live out Mind of Christ!”…

Faithfulness to the word of God implies permanent conversion. I have faced some challenges after coming here in the U.S. though I am a Methodist, I study in a United Methodist Seminary even though I am a Methodist, and I have not able to obtain scholarships from outside the school, like the United Methodist Church. These scholarships are solely meant for the United Methodists. Such an experience tempts one to take turn back on the road which he or she has travelled. (Guiterz 95).…

Peter teaches us, followers of Christ, key things to truly follow Christ. In 1 Peter, he stresses that Christians are to be God 's obedient children, "chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, God 's own people" (1:14). Us as Christians are striving to be a “human-like” Jesus if you will. We are God’s people on Earth doing his work for the work of Him. One example of a true believer is that you have encountered the true and living God and that you have undergone a change in your heart and soul. Another is realizing that the sacrifice of Christ alone for the forgiveness of his sins, then the Holy Spirit has come and lives in that person. The last example of being a true believer is that you are changed on the inside, not controlled from the outside. It means that your heart has been changed by the presence of God. These are just a couple of definitions that define a true follower. In the CCC 916 it states: “…to give themselves to God who is loved above all and, pursuing the perfection of charity in the service of the Kingdom, to signify and proclaim in the Church the glory of the world to come.” This paragraph supports Peter’s teachings about being a true follower of Christ.…

With regards to salvation, it is important to know its importance. According to the Gospel, due to salvation, we are saved from the wrath (judgement) of God. The wrath was imposed upon us, due to the Fall of Man. Of course, this fall directly stemmed from the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Due to their…

Loyalty to God will forever and always be the same. That is fleeing from the things of evil, the things that are not from God and running to God the father. This is everything from being capable to spot heretical teachings, such as the Health/Wealth teachings that are currently on the rise that motivate people to follow Christ for their own personal benefit. However, like Ezer, we need to do better than just be able to spot what is wrong, we need to be able to lead those around us and under our influence into the same conclusion that we have made. We should be able to make followers of Christ that love the Christ, love the word, and actively seek out how to better serve him in order to further the…

Pascal’s wager does not mention this. In Luke 9 it says in verses 57-62 “As they were going along the road, someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’ To another he said, ‘Follow me.’ But he said, ‘Lord, let me first go and bury my father.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’ Yet another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’” Luke 14:25-29 says “’For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.’ Those who heard it said, ‘Then who can be saved?’ But he said, ‘What is impossible with man is possible with God.’ And Peter said, ‘See, we have left our homes and followed you.’ And he said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.’” In Matthew Jesus says that one must lose their life to find it. There is a cost following and believing in Christ. Pascal describes it as all you should do is act like you believe and you will. This is not true, according to…

I believe that my biggest mistake early on in my walk with the Lord was not reading His word for myself. I became a christian at the age of fourteen and filled with the Holy Spirit by the age of sixteen. However, I would rather go on Wednesday nights and hear my youth pastor tell me what the Bible said instead of reading it myself. When I tried to read on my own, I often became very confused and frustrated and gave up. I let other people tell me how to live instead of searching it out myself. I continued this all through high school and finally during my senior year I had a very hurtful situation occur between myself and another family in the church. Since I wasn’t solid in my faith and relationship with the Lord, I let it tear me down significantly and I stayed out the church for about a year and a half. I let another’s faith become my own and when they failed me, I equated that with God failing me.…

We are so attached to material things that when Jesus says to leave EVERYTHING and follow him, most of us can’t help but cling on to our securities and familiar way of life. There was an example I heard once of something similar to this. “ You are a rocket, and you take off and break through the atmosphere. It is now time for the actual spaceship (you) to detach itself from what launched you there. For some reason you can’t let it go… it’s too important to you. Without it you couldn’t have gotten this high up. Now your somewhere unknown and you don’t want to let go! You realize that if you don’t let go soon all the calculations will be messed up and you will delay your orbit (which is God’s mission for you to follow)”. We need to let go just as Jesus commanded. This is an example of how things can really prevent you or distract you from following Jesus. Clinging to the past is dangerous. It scares people to drastically change their life style so they want to stay near to what they know.…
