Flying Spaghetti Monster Research Paper
The academic study of religion constantly tangles with the questions and concerns raised surrounding whether there is actually a value and a definition of the actual term of “religion”. To this day there is no definitive answer, although there are many definitions that try to properly characterize religion they are typically either too strong or too weak. Another problem with the pursuit of trying to define a religion is that there are typically biases on both sides of the belief systems causing the definitions of religion not to be created equally. When it comes to defining religions, not all are defined and recognized as equals. Comparative to each other, the church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster and the Church of Scientology are both religious groups with their own beliefs, members, and practices but are not equal treated when actually recognized as religions in society. For example, the church’s uses persuasion tactics by using famous celebrities to endorse the church. In opposition, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti monster, does not use any tactics to bring followers to its faith. A religion should bring all of its members to better themselves and help better society and live always looking for knowledge and a better understanding of themselves and life. Religion should not just be created and practiced for the intentions to make a profit and gain power, like the church of scientology. From a personal stand point, I view the faith of the flying spaghetti monster more of an actual religion compared to the faith of scientology.
