Flyboys By James Bradley
Title: Flyboys, what the title means to me is that it's about pilots in a war fighting enemies. The title sparks my interest a little. Yes, the title does fit with the text of the book.
Author: James Bradley, I have read another book from this Author before called “Flags of our Fathers”.
Type of Book: Nonfiction, Most people who like to read this kind of book are people who like to learn about war. I read these types of books every once and awhile. I really enjoy reading these types of books about war because war just interests me.
Characters: George H.W. Bush- he was rescued by a submarine after being shot down, he later became the forty-first President of the United States. Jimmy Dye, Glenn Frazier, Floyd Hall, Marve Mershon, Warren Earl

One pilot, George H. W. Bush, was rescued by a submarine. The other eight were captured by the Japanese, and disappeared. A military inquiry after the war was labeled top secret and sealed the story of the fate of these men from even their families.
I did not know that George H. W. Bush was a pilot, nor did I know he was in the military.

Your Evaluation: The way this book compares with “Flags of our Fathers” is that it both takes place in world war II, and both about the war with the Japanese.
The book appealed to me on an emotional level because this story reminded me of the stories that my Grandfather used to tell me when I was younger.

Favorite Quotes: “I have to think to myself: I deserve a death sentence. I didn’t kill just one or two. Only war allows this-these torments I have to bear until I die” (Bradley)
“True combat power is arms multiplied by fighting spirit. If one of them is infinitely strong, you will succeed.” (Asahi Shimbun newspaper, quoted in Japan at War: An Oral History)
“The American people will regret the day I was crucified by politics and bureaucracy." (Billy

" What is Pearl Harbor?"(4). The book I read was Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki. This is what started World War II. During these times Japanese people were treated like animals. They were forced to live in internment camps throughout Executive Order 9066. Executive Order 9066 was approved by Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, this order ordered the military to place Japanese or Japanese Americans into these internment camps. This is where this story takes place, in an internment camp in Manzanar were Jeanne Wakatsuki and her family spend there time during these harsh times. Well developed characters, excellent theme, but a lacking a more entertaining plot makes Jeanne Wakatsuki's Farewell to Manzanar an exceptional book.…

The movie Flyboys is based on the story of a group of young American men who join the French army (an American ally during WWI) to become fighter pilots in the Lafayette Escradrille. The only name in the movie that was based off a real historical figure was one of the squadron’s five French officers; Captain Georges Thenault. While other characters were based off real pilots this is the only figure who kept his real-life name in the movie. The main character, Blaine Rawlings, was based off of American fighter ace Frank Luke. He was ranked 2nd of all American fighter pilots in WWI with his official number of defeated enemy aircraft being eighteen. His specialty in taking out German observation balloons was considered especially heroic because of the balloons protection from gunmen on the ground. Luke’s death was at the end of his gallant streak of airborne victories; eighteen defeated enemy aircraft in only ten days. A U.S. Air Force base is named after him. Like many aces in the war, Luke’s death was the cause of a single machine gun bullet that traveled through his upper body. Although Luke’s achievements and overall persona as a fighter pilot was accurately portrayed in Flyboys, like much of the other characters in the movie, it was the back-stories and filler about the aviators’ personal lives that were historically inaccurate.…

Flyboys exists in a lazy, laid back version of The Great War that simply could not have existed. The pilots lounge around in picturesque France, taking their time to learn to fly and shoot while somewhere over that stand of trees somewhere a war happens. Sometimes they go out and sometimes they die, but our heroes always come back home to a nice cozy, safe bed. The reality of the first terrible world war never really touches the characters in this film and because of that we never get any tangible sense of what exactly it is that they're fighting for.…

In the book, Bad Boys, Ann Arnett Ferguson goes on a three-year journey through Rosa Parks Elementary School to observe and research why it is that mostly black males are ending up in jail and are unsalvageable from such a young age. She interviews and observes daily interactions with the eleven and twelve year old students that have been labeled “at risk” by their teachers and peers. She wants to research how it is being in school when all of the educators have already labeled them as “unsalvagable, at risk, and bound for jail”. These kids pretty much act in the way that their teachers treat them. They get into trouble every single day and most of the times these boys provoke it because that’s how they think there supposed to act because they think they are already going no where in life. At such a young age, these boys, just because they are black, shouldn’t be criminalized and put in a different category than other boys. These children faced many challenges that effected how they learned in school, the way teachers and peers treated them, and how they are labeled as bad boys. Ann Arnett Ferguson said, “in the course of my study it became clear that school labeling practices and the exercise of rules operated as part of a hidden curriculum to marginalize and isolate black male youth in disciplinary spaces and brand them as criminally inclined”(page 2). This means that the educators didn’t really realize they were doing this and labeling these boys but it was more like a tradition and they saw nothing wrong with it. This is purely based on race and obviously some people are still in the mindset that black people are inferior to white people. Bad boys show black males from a very young age being adultified and become very masculine making them becomes part of the criminal system early on.…

Imagine permanently moving to a country where the language, the culture... everything is foreign to you. This is the reality of most immigrant parents, who try to raise their children safely in a foreign country, where strong influences can strip a person of their cultural identity. This is the exact situation we are dragged into, in the short story 'Where The Gods Fly' written by Jean Kwok. Here we meet a Chinese mother's unwelcoming approach, towards her daughter's passion for the arts of ballet.…
