| Tribe #1: Cherokee | Tribe #2: Iroquois | Government | This government consists of the Tribal Council and the Executive Department. The Tribal Council has 12 members which are elected for two-year terms. The Executive Department consists of a Principal Chief, a Vice Chief, and an Executive Advisor. The Principal Chief and Vice Chief are elected for four-year terms by those Tribal members 18 years of age and over. The Executive Advisor is appointed by the Principal Chief and his appointment is confirmed by the Tribal Council. | One of the greatest Native American governments is the Confederacy of the six Iroquois Nations. This was more than a tribal government. It was a group of six different tribal governments. This is the true story of how the Iroquois Confederacy was started. This is a story that has been passed down among the Iroquois tribes from generation to generation. | Economy | The Cherokees are a very industrious people. Nearly all occupy much of their time in the works of arts and crafts which are some of the very finest of the American Indian. They make baskets, pottery, beadwork, finger weaving, stone carvings, and wood carvings. | Traditionally, the Iroquois were farmers and hunters who practiced a slash-and-burn form of horticulture. In addition, they fished and gathered berries, plants, and roots. Before the arrival of Europeans the primary weapons were bows and arrows, stone axes, knives, and blowguns; however, by the late seventeenth Century European trade goods had almost completely replaced the traditional weapons and tools. Industrial arts, trading, and division of labor was also ways of their economy. | Religion | Cherokees were mostly spiritualist. | The Iroquois believed that Great Spirit indirectly guided the lives of ordinary people. | Culture | Both sexes were known to be hospitable but humble.
