Katie Gurman By definition a hero is someone who shows great courage. Although this is true I believe a hero is much more than that. Heroes must poses and display bravery, selflessness, ability to act through fear and courage. Heroes do extraordinary things without hesitation, they know what needs to be done and they act on it. The thing that is most present in my memory today from 9/11 was the fear. Everyone was afraid, but no one around me knew how to act on this fear. Everyone knew something needed to be done but only the hero’s of 9/11 leaped into action. That brings me to two heroic men from 9/11. Special Agent Leonard Hatton is one of many heroes from 9/11. Mr. Hatton saw the second plane crash into the South tower. He responded immediately reporting what he had just experienced and rushed to the scene. Mrs. Hatton describes how, “He joined right in with the fire department to help people and gave his life for it.” Special Agent Leonard Hatton was Marine Corps veteran, a FBI agent, a volunteer firefighter, and most importantly a dad of four children, who saw people in need and did what he, could to help them. Mr. Hatton’s heroic actions led to his death, but saved another’s in the process. Tom Burnett was a hero on flight 93, who decided to fight the hijackers. While on the plane Tom made a series of four phone calls to his wife. In these phone calls he told her that the plane was taken over, that they had a plan and that he was most likely going to die, but he and two others were going to do something. Tom and two others fought the captors and crashed the plane, before it hit its target which was reported to be either the White house or U.S. capital building. This heroic act saved an extraordinary amount of lives and possibly even the president’s life. If Tom and few others had not been so brave, risking their lives confronting the hijackers, then 9/11 would be such a greater devastation to the United States. Thank you Tom Burnett and
