Flowers For Algernon
1. What are the advantages/disadvantages in having superior intelligence?

There are many advantages and disadvantages for being super intelligent. Having this gift can either make your life better, or miserable. Some advantages include the fact that some people feel like with intelligence, they belong in society, and the ability to learn materials easier than others. But on the other hand, having super intelligence can shift you from what you truly desire and make you feel like you're alone for the rest of your life.

“I don’t know what’s worse: to not know what you are and be happy, or to become what you’ve always wanted to be, and feel alone.” ― Daniel Keyes, Flowers for Algernon

In Charlie’s case, before the operation, he thought that people loved him and he had many friends that he can look back to when he needed. He quoted:

“It is easy to make friends if you let pepul laff at you”

This statement suggests that he does not truly know what is happening in the world around him. But when he gained intelligence, he realized that these people were not truly his friends but only mocking him for what he really is.

2. Was it morally/ethically justified for Charlie's sister to say it was okay to operate on Charlie? Explain.

Charlie’s sister is a mature and ‘normal’ woman who is able to make smart decisions regarding her own life and the life of one of her family members. From this, she made a choice regarding Charlie’s situation and she came to a conclusion that she should in fact, agree to proceed with this surgery because she knows what best for her brother, Charlie.

3. Which Charlie was the REAL Charlie? Why?

The real Charlie was the one before the operation, even though he seemed ignorant of what was truly going on, he seemed happy and joyful of the world he lives. Before the operation, he truly believed that the people he worked with and interacted with on a daily basis were his friends and he was happy and felt good about making them laugh.

This leads to quite a bit of conflict throughout the book. Eli the main character does not share his brother’s thirst for blood. Eli isn’t a pacifist, he will still kill at a moments notice if need be, but he is tired of killing for the Commodore. While arguing over what to do with Warm and Morris Eli says, “this is the last job for me, Charlie”(216). Charlie’s response to this also tells a lot about their relationship: “[Charlie] answered without so much as a flinch: ‘Just as you say, brother’”(216). While Eli wants to get the job over with and move on, Charlie is set on continuing to work for “The Commodore”. Charlie claims he will do it whether Eli is by his side or not. Eli is also a lot more sensitive than his brother. Charlie doesn’t seem to care about others. He abuses people when he feels like it and seeks personal pleasure over everything else. Eli is the exact opposite. Eli cares for others almost more than himself. At first Eli hated Tub, his new horse. But as the book goes on, Eli begins to grow a bond with Tub. When Tub loses his eye and needs the socket rinsed with alcohol, Eli is hesitant to pour the alcohol because of the clear pain it causes his horse. Charlie wouldn’t care about something like a horse. If a horse had an issue like an infected eye, Charlie would either shoot it or sell it. He is a very practical person. If someone or something is holding him up, he will get rid of it.…

Charlie’s actions are important because they reveal how we can make irrational decisions without knowing the dangers. Charlie was definitely being brave in choosing to do his surgery, for an act to be courageous, it must involve extreme risk or danger, but it should not be for a personal gain, it should be moral. Charlie agreed to do the surgery, but only because it was going to help him become intelligent. Sure, it would’ve helped his doctors improve the procedure for future trials. But, that doesn’t mean they are helping save someone’s life, they are only improving it temporarily. Earlier in the Flowers for Algernon movie, Charlie reveals how foolish and not courageous his actions were when he tried to use the mixer (in the factory he worked at), without proper training. For an act to be courageous, it must not be irrational. The equipment was dangerous, and Charlie could’ve gotten hurt. Later in the Flowers for Algernon movie, Charlie revealed how selfish he was when he stood up against Dr. Strauss in Chicago. It’s understandable that Charlie was standing up for himself, but he embarrassed Dr. Strauss even after all he had done for him. Charlie was acting like the sun, wanting planets (or everyone and everything) to revolve around…

Charlie is better off smart when it comes to how others treat him. Charlie works at a box factory. During his time there, he has made a few “friends.” I wouldn’t really consider them friends, reading about how they treat him before the surgery. They would take him to the town bars to get him drunk. They would trip him, push him, and more. The sad thing about it, was that Charlie thought it was just normal friendly fun. He would laugh along with them. When somebody else would mess up on something, their action was referred to as “pulling a Charlie Gordon.” Charlie didn’t realize that he was actually…

Another reason why he should not get the operation is his friends. Now that he has a higher intelligent, he can see the true side of his friends. However, when he saw life differently, it was in a bad way, and he then realised he didn’t have any friends. According to the text, Charlie said, “ It’s a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others like to have me. Now I know what it means to pull a Charlie Gordon. I’m ashamed.” (Keyes 231). Readers might also argue that the surgery was a good idea because, he remembered his childhood. However, when he remembered his past he felt very abandoned. For example, as his parents said, “ He’s got to be sent away. I don’t want him in the house any more…” If you had the offer for this surgery, and saw the emotionally inhuman pain it causes, wouldn’t you say…

Angela Oakhurst, and he decides that she is the best doctor to treat Charlie with psychotherapy. Since Charlie suffers from the psychological disorder PTSD, it affects his ability to live a normal life. Dr. Oakhurst was also trying to shape Charlie. The goal in his case was to get him to move on from the fact that his wife and daughters died and continue with his life like he used to live it. The small steps were therapy and help from friends. There are a series of times where Charlie goes to see Dr. Oakhurst, and she uses psychotherapy to ask him if he has thought about what he would like to talk about in that session, but all he can tell her is that he has these things that he does not like to think about or remember. Charlie is repressing the death of his beloved family. Anytime he would get close to talking about what is on his mind, or if he was getting close to remembering or thinking about the 9/11 incident, he would ask her if the session was over yet.
