Flowers for algernon
Rationale#1: ¨ Flowers for Algernon ¨
After I finished ¨ Flowers for Algernon ¨, I thought that scientists, teachers and all people who had witnessed the progress of Charlie had an interesting apprenticeship about mentally handicapped adults. For that reason I thought that one of those persons could share his/her experience with Charlie during the months before and after the operation.
One of the people who knew Charlie very well was his teacher-Miss Kinnian. As an experienced teacher of mentally handicapped adults she learned a lot about the special case that Charlie is while she was teaching him. Because of that it would be instructive for other teachers, scientists or even the parents from mentally handicapped persons to know all details, experiences, teaching techniques, failures, among others.
That is the reason why I decided to write an advice column written by Miss Kinnian for the educational magazine ¨About Campus¨; the magazine central topics are advices for teachers and all kinds of learning and teaching techniques in children, adults and seniors.

The advice column is going to be about the views of an individual-Miss Kinnian. She is going to share her experience and at the same time she is going to be an example for other people who might be in a similar position as she was.
This advice column is going to help the reader to have a full understanding about the process that Miss Kinnian lived while she was teaching Charlie Gordon.

Rationale#2: ¨ Flowers for Algernon ¨
Upon finishing the book ¨ Flowers for Algernon ¨ I had a particular interest for the
Professor Harold Nemur. He is the person who is in charge of the experiment which increased Charlie’s intelligence.
Professor Harold Nemur is an interesting person; he is pretty much obsessed for Charlie´s experiment and for the awards that he might win if the operation on Charlie worked as it was expected to work, for that reason he becomes arrogant.

The first reason why I believe That charlie should have had the operation is that while he was a genius he discovered thing about what was happening to him and he called it the “Algernon-Gordon Effect” (keyes, 80). He also found out how the artificial intelligence works and how it wears off…

The surgery showed the doctors that the surgery can be used on humans, but it has never been done before on humans. There were some side effects to Charlie's surgery. Therefore Charlie's doctors had to act ethically. The side effects were that Charlie would be smart for a little while, and act like a normal human being, but later in life Charlie would go back to being himself again. As…

Charlie had the operation to help him become smarter, but the consequences were risky and changed his life. He thought that if he was smarter he would be able to understand more about things, but a couple of months later he started to lose that knowledge, stating that “[He’ve] got to try and hold on to some of it...the things [He’ve] learned...please don’t take it all away.” (Keyes, 80) He was worried about losing everything he knew and cared about. He had to give up many things, such as typing. He stated that “[He’ve] given up using the typewriter..my coordination is bad....[He’s] moving…

One common argument some readers have throughout is that by having the surgery, Charlie had seen that the world could be very cruel in many ways, but I oppose this stating that even though he has faced many cruel times he has mostly had many beneficial times because of it. For instance, by having the surgery, Charlie was able to make more friends that were much more understanding of him and that didn’t bully him like his previous “friends” Joe and Frank. So as with that, others still oppose and say that he was better off without the surgery because with having the surgery when the effects of it wore off his I.Q. would be decreased less than what his original I.Q. was before the surgery. As that may be true while he had the effects of the surgery he was able to use it to his advantage by making a contribution to science by discovering the Algernon-Gordon effect which would be able to help future researchers on the topic of artificial intelligence and the human…

Charlie’s limited intelligence has made him a trusting, ingenuous and friendly man, as he assumes that all the people in his humdrum existence — mostly his co-workers at Donner’s Bakery are as well-intentioned as he used to be. However, as the neurosurgery stimulates his brain centers and rapidly increases his ability to learn, thereby elevating his mentality, Charlie gains perspective on his past and present. He founds himself becoming aware of a hard-hitting fact that his associates have constantly taken advantage of him and have treated him roughly just for sport, knowing that he would never understand. What is worse, he recovers that even if some people have shown a kindness to him, it usually came out of compassion or condescension and out of attitude to him as an inferior.…

Obviously, the surgery was a failure! Since Algernon died, Charlie realistically could expect his own demise. Although, Charlie’s intellect soared beyond specified predictions, the failure of the surgery- quite shocking to Charlie- was an uncontrollable variable! The doctors, opportunists, could not rectify, remedy this traumatic outcome. Only Charlie, the genius, could analyze the surgery’s inherent problematic components. At this point, Charlie did not regret the surgery; nevertheless, he should not have been the experimental…

The doctors lead Charlie blindly, but willingly, into the surgery, using him for research. Charlie knew not what his new found knowledge would bring him; despair, doubt, dread. He knew of the doctor’s ignorance to his feelings and human status, and of the surgery ultimately failing. Due to the devastating events that would transpire, Charlie should have refrained from undergoing the…

Charlie tells Alice about his conflicted identity: "'What I mean to say is that Charlie Gordon exists in the past, and the past is real. You can't put up a new building on a site until you destroy the old one, and the old Charlie can't be destroyed. He exists...I was insulted when Nemur said he created me'" (Keyes 201). Charlie struggles to understand who he is, whether he is the Charlie before the operation, the one after, or a mixture of both. He is conflicted because of how different he is after the operation, and whether this change is unnatural and artificial, or something that he possessed inside all along. Charlie feels degraded by Nemur's statement, as the words "he created me" show how Nemur feels he has a right over Charlie's identity because he made him the way he is. The opinions of his doctors confuse Charlie because they make him feel like a fabricated person. Charlie does not know if his thoughts and feelings are his own, or the ideas his doctors have given him. Likewise, in Brave New World, everyone is conditioned to have similar identities so that there is no individuality. The director explains the ways people are conditioned to be…

In the story “Flowers for Algernon” written by Daniel Keyes, the main character, Charlie Gordon, and he has a decision to make. Should Charlie make the decision by getting the operation to triple his IQ of 68? Charlie made the wrong decision by getting the operation because it brought pain; he was able to see the true side of his friends, and he was able to see the sad realities of life which he was oblivious to before the operation. He was happy and non-emotional. He thought his friends liked him. He went to adult night school so he can become smarter.…

But that experiment failed drastically, and only left Charlie in a worse condition than before. Even though the experiment made him smarter, it made him realize how dumb he was, and his intelligence decreased to where he started off with. In FFA, Charlie writes "Was I really that stupid?" And "Oh, God, please don't take it all away."Charlie was at least a hard-working man and was happy before the experiment, but becomes suicidal and depressed after the experiment. So, the actions the doctor made were not…

If the surgery would have gone wrong the person to blame would be Miss Kinnian, she persuaded Charlie to do it. Charlie's friends didn’t turn out to be his real friends, especially after Charlie becoming smart. Instead of supporting him they all agreed to sign a petition to fire Charlie from his job. No one outside the lab wanted to be around him because of how different he was. Charlie also gained an unnecessary crush on Miss Kinnian. It interfered with a lot of the "Ethical Work". I feel like if Miss Kinnian wasn’t in the story, maybe just maybe, Charlie would have kept his 'smartness' a bit longer. In the story, the only "good" thing Miss Kinnian did was introduce Charlie to the surgery. That’s all we really needed her for, she was unnecessary to the story after that.…
