After closely studying the rosters of recent Florida State basketball teams, it is evident that Hamilton heavily recruits players at key positions who are great athletes and intense defenders.

Concealed behind each of these profiles is teamwork. There is no way to make it to the top in any sport without it. If a professional player is only performing within the confines of their responsibilities and nothing else, then they are not playing to their max capability, in my opinion. Just because someone is good in sports doesn’t mean that they have it all together in their interpersonal relationships either. And, relationship changes everything. John Wooden said “those who work alone will never become all they could become if they were working in cooperation with others”. Wooden said loyalty was the force that forges individuals into a team and that it was what gets us through hard times. Regarding team spirit, the coach emphasized that eagerness communicates an attitude of “I’ll be happy to sacrifice personal accomplishments for the good of the team”. “We don’t have to be superstars to reach competitive greatness. All we have to do is learn to rise to every occasion, give our best effort and make those around us better as we do…

In his book, Sacred Hoops, he describes his approach to coaching a group of acknowledged stars. Before they appeared on national television playing for thousands of adoring fans, the majority of professional athletes started off at some point as wide-eyed, college freshman recruits, eager to bring glory to their school and to themselves. The hierarchy was set. Starting off at the bottom of the totem pole, they knew that the only way to gain any kind of playing time was to work hard day in and day out, during every practice. Sure enough, the rookie freshman became the All-Star senior who led his school to a championship season. This triumphant story of amateurism resonates in almost every university team’s locker room. Today, however, a hotly debated issue in the National Collegiate Athletic Association threatens to change the very essence of what makes college sports what they are.…

For the past 7 years high school basketball players have had to be one year removed from high school and at least nineteen years of age if they have wanted to participate in the NBA draft. Before this time, high school basketball players had the option of leaving high school after their senior year in hopes of playing in the NBA. College was not a requirement for these athletes. This became very controversial when many players were coming to the NBA straight after high school and turning out to be “busts” for NBA teams. Many players couldn’t handle the big leap from going to the prom, to making millions of dollars and competing at a very high level. Eventually the NBA made a rule that all high school graduates had to be at least one year removed from high school and at least nineteen years of age. With this new rule, athletes started going to college for only one year before participating in the NBA draft. This is what sparked the…
