Florence and the Machine are a BRIT Award winning group who burst onto the music scene after a series of gigs in London, then at the summer music festivals leading to a fast track route to fame starting in UK and spreading across the world. Florence and the Machine's sound have been described as a combination of various genres, including rock and soul. The band's music has received praise across the music media before they gained mainstream success, especially from the BBC who played a large part in Florence and the Machine's rise to prominence by promoting her as part of BBC Introducing. When I was about an hour away from my first gig, I still didn't have a name, so I thought "Okay, I'll be Florence Robot/Isa Machine", before realizing that name was so long it'd drive me mad". In 2006 Welch's performances with Isabella Summers in small London venues under the joint name Florence Robot/Isa Machine began to attract notice. This album included the earliest version of her later hit "Kiss With a Fist", which at this point was entitled "Happy Slap". The band's debut album, Lungs, was released on 6 July 2009, and held the No. 2 position for its first five weeks in the UK Album Chart. On 17 January 2010, the album reached No. 1 on the UK album chart, having remained in the chart for 28 consecutive weeks up until that point. The album has been within the top 40 in the United Kingdom for 63 consecutive weeks, making it one of the best selling albums of 2009 and 2010 so far. At the 2010 BRIT Awards, Lungs won the "Mastercard British Album" award. Florence and the Machine performed at the

Van Halen took heavy metal to new heights. After more than two decades of playing sold-out concert halls, selling millions of albums and enduring various lineup changes and solo projects, Van Halen is recognized as one of the most resilient and successful rock bands to emerge from the 1970s and continue into the 1980's. Eddie and Alex Van Halen were raised in Pasadena, the children of Dutch immigrants who immigrated to California in 1967. The Van Halen brothers grew up taking classical piano lessons. Eddie played guitar and Alex played the drums as teenagers. In 1974, they hooked up with David Lee Roth (vocals) and Michael Anthony (bass), while gigging around town in their band Mammoth. Within a few years, they had become one of the most popular bands on the Los Angeles scene. Fans packed L.A.'s smoky rock clubs to check out Eddie's unconventional guitar riffs and Roth's over-the-top showmanship.…

Just two weeks ago I went to a Florence concert at the Bank Atlantic Center to accompany a friend of mine. Little did I know Florence + The Machine was going to be my newest obsession. Florence + The Machine’s energy in the concert flows through your veins, I absolutely fell in love with their songs and such inspiring lyrics. “Shake It Out” stood out the most because I feel it’s so relevant to our teenage lives. Florence Welch, the singer and song writer of the band, describes this song as the “hangover cure” song. Florence claimed that she felt many regrets haunting her and suddenly sitting in the studio while her producer, Paul Epworth, was playing around with organ chords she wrote the song within half an hour. I feel the song lyrics came so easy to Florence because as I state again, this song can relate to anyone and everyone.…

The song “What Kind of Man” by the band Florence & The Machine was released in 2015, yet still features many jazz influences. The lyrics are a metaphor for a broken relationship that is worsening, although the narrator wants to leave. For example, Florence Welsh, the lead vocalist, sings that her lover “let me dangle at a cruel angle/oh, my feet don’t touch the floor.” This line is not literal, metaphorically comparing the relationship to being hung over a canyon. These lyrics, written by the singer, are similar to that of jazz lyrics, which were often had a secret meaning in their imagery, preceded by the slaves’ coded field hollers. While the lyrics in “What Kind of Man” are not ‘dirty,’ they do indirectly refer to the situation, needing…

This 1950 play by Alice Childress takes place in a train station waiting room in a very small town in the south. The play describes how Miss Whitney, an old black woman, discovers that her premonition of the success of her daughter, Florence, as a black actress is undesirably similar to that of a racist, white society. This troubling discovery has just as strong an impact on the reader as it does on Miss Whitney. This drama teaches the reader how the views and opinions of individuals or groups can influence other individuals or groups, although their views and opinions may be opposite, to approach situations with the same reaction.…
