Flight Behavior Themes
In the book Flight Behavior, the difference in social classes, nature, and climate change are three very common themes. Initially, in the book Kingsolver carefully builds the readers imagery of the people of Feathertown. They are quiet, religious, rural people with little education, and little culture or experience outside of their small community. However, as the Monarch's enter the story, the science theme is introduced. The reader is then able to have a window into the scientific aspect of the novel. Dr. Ovid discusses the climate change and global warning, and its dangerous effects on the world. He even tries to get the townspeople to realize that the presence of the Monarchs is a sign of global warming in itself. However, the townsfolk are convinced it is simply a miracle, and this is where they choose to leave it. However, as the story progresses, as different as their lives may be, the reader starts to see the parallel between the two cultures. I think this is where they find the middle ground. And personally, I think that this is a very real and serious issue. The increase amount of polar vortexes have seen over the past year are directly related to the climate change, and global warming. Also, there is melting of the polar ice caps, and countless species, whether insect, mammals, bird, or fish, are all at great risk. Many species have already been driven away from their primary habitats in places like Antarctica, related to the major changes. It is also leading to a complete switch in the weather system. It is cold where it was once warm, warm where it was cold, dry where wet, and wet where dry. Everything is getting turned upside down, and if the science trail is followed back to it's roots, climate change and global warming are the culprit for many of these concerns and
