Flaws In The Great Gatsby
Just like someone said: Your character is your destiny. It decided one’s sense of worth and the ways of thinking and attitude. So, what are the great flaws in the character of main characters and how this lead Gatsby walk into the depths of despair? Let’s start from Gatsby.
Gatsby is a typical representative who tries all his life to pursue “the American dream”. First of all, what he followed is not “reality principle” but “pleasure principle”. That means ephemeral and harmful pleasant sensation and satisfaction happened in front of him is the only thing which he lays emphasis on. The root of his pleasant sensation is to get back the lost love. He firmly believes “equality of opportunity” which can not be accepted by society. He is a man of low birth and eagers to get daisy, therefore, a clear timetable for antion had been formulated when he was young. He was waitting for the day when he can stand out among people. However, the American dream is just a dream, not everyone can gain recognition by upper class under capitalist system. In The Great Gatsby, it seems like a miracle that he can gather all the businessmen amd hire or fire anybody. However, it is impossible that he can ascend the privilege of wealthy society no matter how much he has. What is far more tragic is that he never admits that he is a son of a peasant farmer and regards himself as the same rank with Daisy. There is a impassable gulf between Gatsby and Daisy, it is of necessity that he must be persecuted or killed no matter who dares to talk about equality. On the other hand, he is a romanticist who devotes himself to look for so-called “Innocent Love”.
