The Five Dysfunctions of a Team Paper The book, “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team”, is a leadership fable by Patrick Lencioni. Lencioni’s book is a New York Times bestseller that helps to not only identify the five dysfunctions that a team may face, but also to provide advice on how to deal with each of these dysfunctions. Lencioni uses a pyramid structure to help showcase each of the five dysfunctions and where they each would be on the pyramid. The first dysfunction of a team that Lencioni explains in the book is the absence of trust. Lencioni puts absence of trust at the base of the pyramid because he believes that trust is the foundation of teamwork. Lencioni places fear of conflict on the second level of the pyramid because the absence of trust on a team creates a false sense of harmony. He explains that when there is an artificial harmony within a team, there becomes a lack on constructive conflict. When there is a lack of constructive conflict within a team, team members will have fear of expressing their feelings and possible concerns. Establishing a team environment that doesn’t have the fear of conflict will bring great amounts of team efficiency and productivity.
The fourth dysfunction of a team that Lencioni explains in the book is the lack of commitment. Lencioni places lack of commitment on the third level of the pyramid. This is because when team members aren’t open to hearing new ideas and opinions, the team members will fail to commit to a team plan. When team members aren’t open to hearing new ideas and opinions, this may be due to the team members feeling that their voice and opinions don’t matter. With academics, I can use the principles I’ve learned to not only become a better and more productive group member, but also be able to make my group become a better and more productive team. In my current workplace, I can use the principles I learn to help create an environment where all my co-workers will be comfortable speaking their feelings and opinions. For my future career, I will be able to apply these principles to my future team that I will manage. Using the principles that I have learned in Lencioni’s book will help me be able to create a team environment that will nurture and grow the greatest possible team that me and my team members are capable of. I can apply the principles I have learned in Lencioni’s book to my spiritual life by helping the body of Christ become more unified. I can start by creating a better team environment in my local church which will then inspire other churches to do the same.
