fishing trip
Is there anything better than a good fishing trip? I mean, really? I get to fish fairly often and it’s always fun to be out on the water. But, there are fishing trips and then there are FISHING TRIPS! Well, last week I had one of those trips for the memory books. The kind of trip you love to talk about and show pictures to all your friends until they are green with envy.

I had the pleasure of fishing with a local fishing celebrity, Gary Finch. Gary and I met not too long ago at a meeting where Gary spoke to the crowd about conservation. Immediately I thought, “I’ve got to meet this person”. I got in touch with Gary and we scheduled a fishing trip. Little did I know we were going out with one of the best captains in South Alabama, William Manci of Eastern Shore Outfitters. My boss Bethany and I arrived at the boat launch a little early and as we waited for Gary to arrive we heard a voice with a deep southern drawl say “Y’all waiting to go fishing”? We answered in the affirmative and boarded Captain Will’s boat. He took us out in Weeks Bay while we awaited Gary’s arrival. Not five minutes passed before we were reeling in Speckled trout and a good-sized Black drum. I instantly thought, “It’s going to be a good day.”

The weather was perfect–warm with a hint of fall in the air. After picking up Gary we headed into Mobile Bay. The water was like glass as the boat skipped across. Dolphins played in the boat wake and pelicans dove for breakfast as we skimmed across the water. We anchored near a natural gas rig and put our game faces on. Soon we were catching more Speckled trout and a few White trout. Then the trip got more exciting. We started catching Spanish mackerel and they were big and feisty. I got a bite just about every time I threw my line in the water. It was amazing. We were neck and neck in a friendly competition of who was catching the biggest fish when Gary hooked a fish that would dwarf all others. As first he wasn’t sure what he had hooked. Excitement

The book, finding fish, is a poignant autobiography of the life of Antwone Quenton Fisher, an African American boy who suffered a tumultuous childhood in a foster care setting. He was born on 8-3-1959 in a Cleveland prison to Eva Mae Fisher. She was incarcerated for the shooting death of his father, her boyfriend at the time, Eddie Elkins. Initially, he spent his first few weeks of his life in a Cleveland orphanage. Then he was fostered by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Nellie Strange. She lovingly cared for him for two years. One 10-11-1961 he was placed in the foster home of the Reverend and Mrs. Pickett, an African American couple who came from southern black heritage. Mr. Pickett was a kind man with a doctorate in medicine and his wife, the abuser, was the matriarch of the family. For the next eighteen years of Antwone’s life, he would suffer terrible physical, verbal and emotional abuse in this home, even though he would have a total of thirteen social workers “monitoring” his case. In the Pickett’s home, Antwone had three foster siblings; Flo, Dwight and Keith. Antwone suffers so much chronic abuse that he never feels confident enough to tell any of his social workers about his abuse. He is even sexually abused by Willenda, a babysitter who cares for the children at times. Antwone is finally kicked out of the home around his sixteenth birthday and he finds himself at George Junior Republic, a reform school for boys. Even though he isn’t a trouble maker, he loves being there because he finds teachers who really mentor him. While he lives there, he is able to take tests and graduate early from high school. Unfortunately now he has “graduated’ from the foster care system since he is eighteen and he is forced to become homeless and sell drugs for money. The best thing that ever happens to him is when he enrolls in the United States Navy. While serving an eleven year term, he develops…

The intense bond between father and son is full of subtle meanings and inferred emotions, but this bond remains strong nevertheless. This relationship has been examined time and time again, but Trumbo sheds new light on it when he focuses on the particular relationship of Joe and his father in “Johnny Got His Gun”. This passage looks at the significance of the annual fishing trip they take and the careful way in which they approach each other. When Joe’s friend Bill Harper decides to come to this sacred fishing event, the equilibrium of the whole relationship is questioned. Trumbo combines the use of perspective, syntax, and specific selection of detail in order to depict the precarious balance of their father-son relationship during the confusing…

“You’ll just be cold now and not hungry.” Everyone got settled in we got our poles set up with the right weights and lures. That proved to be quite difficult due the fact that our fingers hadn’t fully thawed yet. We dropped our lines into the water and hoped for the best especially with the luck we’ve had the past few years in the same general area. We fished for a while and didn’t get any bites so we added more weight to the lines so the bait would sink deeper and hopefully that would be where the fish were. We dropped our lines into the water and almost immediately my father had something on his line. He reeled in and the fish continued to fight. The fish came out of the water and flopped onto the ice above gasping for air. The monster he reeled in was a walleye no more than five inches long. “I didn’t know we were fishing for sharks.” I said…

After an analysis of the sport of fishing, I have learned a lot about its discourse community and how people are involved in the sport today, and how the sport has effected the world today. My research started with the interpretation of several books related to the discourse community, which brought the attention of new information about professional fishing to the forefront of my research of the everyday life of the discourse community members. The sport of fishing has a wide variety of the type of members that represent the community, such as new members, or members that are not as serious as a professional fisherman, but anyone can join the discourse as an up and coming member at anytime, especially little kids. To become apart of this discourse all you really need to do is have the desire to go fishing, which a lot of people use as a relaxation tool for their life.…
