First Scene Analysis
First Scene
Narrator: Ruth is a 17 y/o college student who used to be so cheerful and happy. When she was only 11, her mom left her and her dad. Well, that’s what his dad always told her. But despite that, she was still grateful and contented with her life. Suddenly, a tragedy happened and her dad died because of car accident and in just a snap, she became an orphan.
(Ruth is being consoled by Samantha, her bestfriend)
Samantha: Please, take a good care of yourself Ruth. I know it’s hard, but it gets better. You still have your Aunt Mary and Uncle John, you know. Everything will be okay.
Ruth: You’re just saying that because you’re not in my position! You’re not the orphan here, Samantha!
Samantha: I know but—

Aunt Mary: Ruth, honey, do you wanna come with us? We’re going to church.
Ruth: No, thanks. I’m lazy! Why are you still believing in Him, anyway? He’s not real.

Aunt Mary: What? How about the workers? How about their family?
Ruth: Family? *laughs* I don’t care. I have the power, the decision, and I chose to shut it down.
Aunt Mary: I hope you’re making the right choice, Ruth.
Third Scene
Narrator: After school, Ruth and Samantha decided to have a girl’s night out at Sam’s apartment.
(on the way to apartment, they’re eating while walking)
Ruth: I am so full.

Beggar: Please, can I have a piece of bread? I am so hungry.

Samantha: (slaps Ruth) WHAT DID I EVER DO TO YOU?? I TREATED YOU LIKE MY OWN SISTER, RUTH!!!
Ruth: What did you ever do to me? WHENEVER I SEE YOU, I ALWAYS HAVE THIS ANGER INSIDE. YOU REMIND ME OF HOW SHITTY OF A PERSON I AM. YOU HAVE EVERYTHING, SAMANTHA! YOU HAVE THE PERFECT FAMILY, YOU’RE THE PERFECT DAUGHTER, YOU’RE THE DREAM GIRL!! AND I ALWAYS ASK, “WHY CAN’T I BE LIKE HER?” “GOD, WHY DIDN’T YOU GIVE ME THE PERFECT LIFE?” I AM SO JEALOUS OF YOU, SAMANTHA!! AND SO I THOUGHT, WHY NOT RUIN IT? IT’S TOO PERFECT.
