Fire Prevention in the Healthcare Setting
Fire safety and fire prevention are very important. Prevention is defined as the act of prevention, to stop, hinder or to keep from happening. Accidents are bound to happen, it is impossible to predict when it is going to occur but we can always be more cautious to lower those odds. Unfortunately, as much as we would like to think that such a thing will not happen in our lifetime, it will. The top three causes in a house fire is an electrical malfunction, heating, and the number one cause is cooking with a 46% chance. The damages alone can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, having to replace total loss of personal items. The total amount of deaths by fire in 2011 is 1,389,500 (www.usfa.fema.gov).
On the early morning of February 9th, 2015, at Antelope, CA it was 0400 hours in the morning as fire started while everyone was asleep. This news caught my attention not because of how it happened, but where it happened. People woke the distinct smell of smoke. They immediately rushed to the location and realized that there truck had caught on fire. To my surprise, the men that have woken up from the smell were firemen and it was there Ambulance there the engine bay that had burst into flames. Lucky, since these are trained professionals they were able to assess the situation and were able to successfully extinguish the flames with no harm to any individuals. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
As individuals we can take a step forward to stop the spread of a fire. No one wants to be placed in any hostile situation but it is better to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. Here are a few steps once a fire has been alerted in the building. “Alert all staff. Call out your facility’s code phrase and announce where the fire is. The staff member closet to the manual fire alarm

One of the most vital aspects of fire protection is to recognize a budding fire emergency as soon as possible, and to notify the facility's tenants and proper emergency groups. This is the primary function of all fire detection and alarm systems. Depending on the expected fire situation, structures and type, quantity and occupants (health care, business, residential, industrial, and day care), and criticality of contents and mission, these systems can offer multiple key functions to aid in the safety of the occupants (Department of Veterans Affairs (Office of Construction & Facilities Management) , 2011). Their first two functions are the most vital. The first being a way to identify a fire hazard as it transpires through either manual or automatic methods. Secondly, it alerts the structures occupants to an imminent fire hazard and the need to withdraw from the building. Another common function in a non single family structure is to send an emergency alarm notification to the local emergency response organizations. Some systems are even designed to sensitive systems to…

On August 5, 1949, a wildfire overran 16 smokejumpers and firefighters in Mann Gulch on the Helena National Forest in Montana. The fire was most likely started by lightning from a thunderstorm. It was noticed promptly by rangers, who dispatched 16 smokejumpers, under the command of Wagner Dodge. Thought to be much smaller than it actually was, the fire quickly grew large and out of control, covering 3000 acres in 10 minutes during its blow up stage. Upon approaching Mann Gulch, the crew noticed the fire had already crossed onto their side of the gulch. Seeing the extreme danger in this, the order to retreat back up the slope was given and the men moved up the hill. Dodge later gave the order for the men to drop their pack…

This fire was believed to have been started around noon of that day ("Witch Creek Investigation Report"). The Guejito fire was discovered near Guejito bridge in the NW corner of Rancho Bernardo on Oct. 22nd, at around 1pm (Kochanski et al, 2009). A witness to the fires noted that the Guejito burned the North-East portion of his land and a couple of hours later the WCF advanced from the South-East and destroyed the rest of his property (Kochanski et al, 2009). The Witch and Guejito fires quickly merged, burning 80,000 ha, destroying 1141 homes and causing two fatalities (Mitchell, 2013). The combined fire ranks as the fifth largest and third most destructive in California’s recorded history (Mitchell, 2013).…

Introduction The triangle fire disaster in 1911 was the opening for United States to consider fire safety measures in the country. After the incidence, New York City, where the fire started, tighten up their laws to not only ensure fire safety but also lead to various labour laws including strict child labour, worker’s right, and sanitation issues. Records suggest their employers did not properly compensate majority of workers at that time while they also allow individuals too young to work as some of them age only 14 or 15.…

I believe the firefighters should have been aware of superheating. Considering that firefighters work constantly to banish flames before they grow, the firefighters should know about all possible ways a wildfire can receive fuel. Additionally, having knowledge of other incidents where superheating caused explosion would have allow them to be better prepared. Overall, the firefighters took to situation too lightly, but if they had realized the fire always has the potential to escalate quickly then perhaps they may have been poised to neutralize the…
