Merriam-Webster. (2004), The Merriam-Webster Dictionary. In New York:

A fire extinguisher is a portable container usually filled with chemicals for putting out fires. (Merriam-Webster, 2004) An active fire protection device used to extinguish or control fires. Fire extinguishers are mostly used in emergency situations, and is not intended for an out of control fire. Fires that get out of control normally need the expertise of a fire department. Trying to put out a fire by yourself, can only cause you harm unless you know what you are doing. “Typically, a fire extinguisher consists of a hand-held cylindrical pressure vessel containing an agent, which can be discharged to extinguish a fire. “ (Nadar, 2010`) Fire needs fuel oxygen and heat to burn. Fire extinguishers help to put out fires by either by applying an agent that cools the burning fuel, or displaces the surrounding oxygen, depending on the type of fire extinguisher that you use. There are many different types of fire extinguishers, each meant to put out a certain type of fire, which I will talk about later.
How a fire extinguisher works. A release valve acts as a locking mechanism and prevents this gas from escaping. When you pull the safety pin and squeeze the lever, the lever pushes on an actuating rod which presses the valve down to open a passage to the nozzle. The compressed gas is released, applying a downward pressure on the fire-extinguishing material. This pushes the material out the nozzle with high amounts of pressure.” ("Fire

Von Drehle shares that after the 1911 Triangle fire, a fire Marshall “[concluded that] someone tossed a match or a cigarette into [a] scrap bin” (119). During this specific event, workers rushed to use the stored water buckets to put out the fires, but it proved to not be enough, so they attempted to utilize the hoses available to them. This system ended up not working due to factors including low water pressure. With no internal source of water, there was essentially no way to extinguish the flames from inside the building. In present day America, there are specific fire codes to ensure flammable products are kept securely confined to fire proof containers. Sprinkler systems are required in many buildings to provide a reliable and automatic emergency water…

The flamethrower is a potent weapon with great psychological impact upon unprepared soldiers, inflicting a particularly horrific death. This has led to some calls for the weapon to be banned. It is primarily used against battlefield fortifications, bunkers, and other protected emplacements. A flamethrower projects a stream of flammable liquid, rather than flame, which allows bouncing the stream off walls and ceilings to project the fire into blind and unseen spaces, such as inside bunkers or pillboxes. Typically, popular visual media depict the flamethrower as short-ranged and only effective for a few meters (due to the common use of propane gas as the fuel in flamethrowers in movies, for the safety of the actors). Contemporary flamethrowers can incinerate a target some 50–80 meters (165–270 feet) from the gunner; moreover, an unignited stream of flammable liquid can be fired and afterwards ignited, possibly by a lamp or other flame…
