Finishing High School
Is it a good idea for students to finish high school in three years and enter college or the work force one year early? I believe that it is an awesome idea to be able to finish high school early. This would help young adults to be able to experience life beyond school much sooner. Early graduation opens up many opportunities to do things that students may want to during the open year between high school and college instead of going straight to college. Finishing high school early also has its financial advantages. Attending high school for three years rather than four includes the possibility of having to take summer courses and maybe evening classes. Although the work may be difficult, graduating earlier opens up a new world for the student.

Imagine someone being 17 years old with a few months left until high school graduation and on their own with the future to think about; that person was me. I decided that I was going to wait a couple of years before I went back to school and I really wish that I wouldn’t have. If I wouldn’t have waited, I would already be done with my degree and making good money. Claude Brown was born in 1937 and raised in Harlem--that district of Manhattan north of Central Park between Eighth Avenue and the East and Harlem rivers. His parents had moved up from South Carolina in 1935 and settled in a tenement at 146th Street and Eighth Avenue. Included in the family were two girls, Carole and Margie, and two boys, Claude and Pimp. The Browns were among the first of the waves of black migrants who left sharecropping farms in the South to come to the urban North. To these people, moving to the North meant a better life--a life in the "promised land." Claude--or Sonny, as he was called by his family and friends--spent his preschool days battling other boys in the streets of Harlem. He was encouraged to do so by the lifestyles of the street people. He was adopted as a mascot for an infamous Harlem bebop gang, the Buccaneers, and later became a member of its stealing division, the Forty Thieves. By the time he was ten years old, he had been in and out of New York's Children Centers and had been expelled from school several times. His parents reacted in two ways: His father tried to beat him into changing, and his mother pleaded with him, believing that Claude had been "born with the devil in him." Hoping that Claude would do better away from New York, his family sent him to live with his grandparents in South Carolina. During…

    Graduating High School

I am the one in the picture with the sloppy bun in my hair and the bright red cheeks. The one who can't stop smiling. With all my friends surrounding me, it was one of the best days of my life. All fifteen of us look happy; it was a night for many smiles. Everyone is crowded around the table. There are a lot of red cheeks in the picture; the room was as hot as a sauna. There was a strong smell of barbeque sauce in the air as well. The picture was taken right after dinner. The table we are crowded around is messy. There are a lot of cups on the table and bottles of ketchup and barbeque sauce, with dirty, green napkins piled up. The restaurant was as noisy as the circus when the clowns perform. There were a lot of pictures taken that night, but out of all the pictures, this is the best one taken of everyone. Crouched down in front is Brent Dana. He has a grin on his face more than a smile. Brent hates pictures, and he doesn't smile in any of them; he is wearing his red "Rag Tails" shirt that he always wears. Next to Brent is Jade Walker. She has her hair back and is wearing her red "North Face" jacket. Jade has an adorable smile on her face. Next to Jade is Mary Attaway leaning over the table wearing a flowered backless shirt with a black sweater. To the right of Mary is Laura Jones. Laura is slightly leaning her head toward her right shoulder and is wearing a blue shirt with a drawstring tie in front. Laura has her arm around Erica Farnsworth, who has a yellow shirt and white jacket on. She looks especially happy; she is smiling from ear to ear. Starting in the left hand comer (in row two) are Chad Phillips and Caitlin Pollock standing together. Chad has his arms around Caitlin's waist. He has this cute little grin, and Caitlin has a huge smile and rosy red cheeks. Brittany Wilkins is next to Caitlin with a puzzled look on her face, the face you would see in a hard Algebra II exam when you don't think you even learned what the question is asking. To the top right of…

Moving on, there has been a current trend of graduating in 5 years then in 4 year. Many students take that root to delay their entrance to the real world. As well as having an easier time in school. Unfortunately it’s financially a bad idea because it’s adding another year of expenses. “The longer you extend campus life, the more debt you rack up. It’s not just the cost of tuition, there’s rent, food, books and etc.” The “take 5” campaign persuades students to take five courses each semester to graduate on…

Without a doubt, there is plenty of high school graduates that are unprepared for the working adult world or even college. According to a survey conducted by "Youth Truth", 55% of high school graduates do not think they are prepared to go to college and are not ready to choose a career path. This implies that more than half of high school graduates will either have trouble during college, lack basic skills, or will discontinue their education. After high school, the graduates become legal adults and will eventually have to provide for themselves and possibly a family. Although you are able to get a job with only a high school diploma, it may not be enough to pay bills, taxes, and other daily expenses. Applicants who seek work with only a high…

" According to the Education Commission of the States, twenty-one states allow early graduation from high school. Ah, college. It is the time of our lives where adolescents turn into maturing adults. It is a time for freedom for most teenagers, but it is a giant step closer to their lifelong career. For some of the graduates, college is not the right path for them. For most, college can be a rigorous four years and beyond to an early adult’s life. Lenient people consider graduates should be able to settle their stressed minds a year before entering college because of the pressure in their previous school life. High school graduates should not take so long resting before the start of their college careers, because their minds can erase so much information learned from high school; and not keeping on track with your academic and personal performance could hinder your potential in college.…
