An annual savings of nearly $2500 can be realized because: 17,117.49 Current Estimated Total Cost -14,693.94 New Total Cost 2,423.55 Annual Savings

The current distribution system has 100 products in line with production occurring at three firms nearby Cleveland, OH and there are company owned distribution centers in each region. The following is a flowchart of the current system:

As one can likely deduct, the current system is inefficient simply because, if there is a stockout at 1 or more of the plants, the regional DCs must wait for their producers in Cleveland, OH to finish making the products and ship them (a cost) back to the regional DC before the regional DC can stock it into inventory (a cost) or ship (a cost) it to fulfill the customer's order (a bottleneck like effect). CALCULATIONS

If construction of a National Distribution Center costs $400,000 for a 200,000 unit facility, it would take almost 60 years of savings to pay off the cost of the NDC. The cost of the NDC can be offset by $250,000 recovered from closing each of the regional

Before considering the forecast model as gospel, it is important to understand some of the limitations and assumptions the model makes. The model is using a 20 percent increase in direct shipments to all stores. Although it would be wise to bypass the distribution center (DC) altogether and ship directly to the stores, could the vendors supplying the SKUs be capable of such an increase, and how would that factor into meeting the goals of project 275? With eight inventory management projects underway, does the model take into consideration the possible future benefits of the programs?Using the model, Brad has come to the conclusion that TSC has three options: higher a third party logistics company to handle overflow, increase the size of the current DC, and establish another DC. In the face of Brad’s current forecast, one of these three options seem to be the next step for TSC. However, implementingadditional improvements to the supply chain may make expansion oroutsourcing third party support a necessity of tomorrow.…

First of all, let’s look at the situations of current ALKO’s distribution system. Take annual cost of 1 high product at DC1 under current system as example:Averageinventory=Q/2+SS=T*D/2+Z*σD*√T+L=6*35.48/2+1.645(CSL=95%)*6.98*√6+5=212.88/2+38.08=144.52units, Order up to level=DT+L+SS= (6+5)*35.48+38.08=390.28+38.08=428.4units,Total units transported annually=Q*(365/6)=212.88*(365/6)=212.88units/order*60.83orders=12950.2units. And we got the: Holding cost of inventory in storage= $0.15/unit/day*144.52units*365days=$7,912.5, Holding cost of inventory in transit=$0.15/unit*12950.2units=$1,942.5,Transportation cost from plant to DC1=$0.09/unit/day*35.48units*365days=$1,165.5, Transportation cost from DC to customer=$0.1/unit/day*35.48units*365days=$1,295. Therefore, in current system: Annual Cost of 1 high product at Distribution Centre1 =7912.5+1942.5+$1165.5+$1295=$12,315.5. Then 10 high products of DC1 will be $123,155. After calculating all the other costs in this method, the total annual cost of inventory and distribution in current system is $1,063,918.…

Context: Alco a US based company founded in 1943, started with the business of making lighting fixtures. It went public in 1963 and since then it has introduced many new lighting fixtures. It been very successful in distributing its products nationwide until recently company when it found that the company’s profitability has began to worsen due to intensified competition in spite of the great product quality. It hired Gary Fisher to identify the problem and restructure the company. He identified that the company’s distribution is eating into the company’s profitability and therefore needs to be analyzed in great detail. The company’s current distribution system had 5 Distribution Centres (DCs) serving entire demand across US through three production plants. However, this led to holding inventory for each type of product at each DC and significantly increasing the inventory holding costs. Therefore, quantitative and qualitative analysis needs to be done to check the feasibility of having a common National Distribution Centre (NDC) or combining the demand of certain regions or products to have an optimized solution to minimize the total cost by trading off the increased distribution cost and warehouse cost with reduced inventory holding cost…
