Main Issue:
By looking over McDonalds recent financial statements, should Blue Sky Portfolio Management consider McDonald’s as a possible investment in the near future?
Recommendation:
Investing in McDonald’s industry is a decent option that Blue Sky Portfolio Management can take in to consideration.
Analysis:
In McDonalds it can be seen that operating margin is increasing in the past two years. This would show that the McDonald’s revenue before tax after deducting direct costs and overhead is increasing. High operating margin shows that McDonald is earning more per dollar of sales that is more favourable compare to similar corporations. However, operating margin include McDonalds ordinary business operations and excludes other revenue, losses and liabilities. Now by observing net profit margin it is noticeable that McDonalds is getting stronger in enforcing their pricing policies, cost structure and production efficiencies. Also, net profit margin for McDonalds illustrates lower long-term loan liabilities compare to year 2008. These ratios can be observed in exhibit 2.
By looking deeper in the vertical common-size balance sheet (Exhibit 1) it is observable that total asset of McDonalds is increasing from 2008 to present. Therefore, the total equity or liability of the company need to change to match the increasing total asset. McDonald’s total equity have decreased and total liability have increase in the last two years. This shows that return on equity increases because there are less outstanding equity. Even though increase in liability can raise the risk of a company, McDonalds is a trustworthy company and play as a first mover in the food industry, which it can make them a reliable company for investment.

The income statement shows that Gopher manufacturing has a gross profit margin of about 41 per cent. A lower than 50 per cent gp margin means that Gopher Manufacturing generates a low level of revenues to pay for its operating expenses and net profit. It also indicates that either the business is unable to control production and inventory costs (which can also be seen from the DIO), or the prices may be set too low. Moreover, the Net Profit Margin is a relatively low 7.7 per cent. This indicates the high Cost of Goods sold and may mean that the company is not keeping its operating expenses under control. If the Net Profit Margin goes any lower, Gopher Manufacturing might need to take on debt to pay its expenses.…

No dividends were paid in the first two years and as a result, the growth in dividends per share has been 100%. Equity per share has shown a growth over the years. Issuing more shares has resulted in lower sales and net income per share. The negative effect is especially felt on net income per share. This is not a good sign for the company, as it will negatively affect share prices financial markets. Financing the expansion in 2008 with a growth in equity seems to have been an unreasonable…

With sales at its core retail business wavering and bad-debt write-offs growing with their credit card, Target was unable to provide the same sales throughout the year. Comparing the debt-to-equity ratios will show how much debt is used to finance operations which could cause the company to produce more revenue than it could have without the debt. The debt-to-equity ratios in 2008 for Target and Wal-Mart were 1.12 and .69, respectively. A high debt-to-equity ratio, like Target, indicates…

Within seventeen years, he had become a billionaire and was responsible for the success of one thousand millionaires! Sales and income have steadily increased every year and until 1998, McDonald’s has had a positive percent gain. In 1998, McDonald’s was opening 2,400 new restaurants around the world.
