According to Locke, primary qualities are measurable by the mind, thus they are independent of perception. The primary qualities of an object are the features it really has, including its solidity, size, extension, figure, motion, number, etc. In contrast, secondary qualities are objects that are not measurable of the mind, and thus they are perception dependent. Secondary qualities include the ideas it produces for color, smell, sound, taste, etc. Locke claims that our sensations of primary qualities resemble the properties of the object we perceive. However, our sensations of secondary qualities don’t resemble the object at…

Have you ever thought of inventing your own word and have it emerge as an absolute sensation? In Frindle, a magnificent book by renowned author Andrew Clements, a young boy named Nicholas Allen is faced with a language-arts teacher who practically worships the dictionary. But it doesn’t stop there. From making students learn a new word out of the dictionary every day to making you do an oral report on the origin of English, Mrs. Granger tries hard to apply the dictionary into the lives of all the children she teaches. Mrs. Granger’s love of this everyday language fascinates Nick and he proceeds to make up his own word: frindle. Who says you can’t make up a word? Sure, a pen is named after the Latin pinna, but where did pinna come from, anyway? Nick was a curious boy with an extravagant idea.…

Although well related, sensation and perception play two complimentary but vastly different roles in how we interpret our world as humans. Sensation refers to the process of sensing our environment through touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell, also known as the five senses. This information is then sent to our brains in raw form where perception comes into play. Perception is the way we interpret sensations and then make sense of everything surrounding us. Both sensation and perception are simply two terms used to describe how our senses work coherently together to organize and interpret information. Although sensation and perception are used conjointly in processing the world around us, they each have individual processes that together piece together our world almost as you would a jig-saw puzzle.…

What is Filariasis, it’s a disease of tropical countries, is caused by types of parasitic worms called nematodes or more commonly known as round warm. They are parasites that are slender and threadlike, and they are tissue-dwelling worms. The worms are transmitted by mosquitoes and other biting insects, and can be easily spread by flies as they pass from person to person. Lymphatic filariasis is most common to develop in countries with a tropical climate. The larvae will enter the body when the mosquito bites you and then will travel to the lymphatic system, where they mature into adult worms. When the worms turn into adults and are inside your lymphatic system it can cause swelling and scarring of the legs, known as elephantiasis, it can also cause an obstruction of the lymphatic system generally occurs in the groin area leading to scrotal enlargement up to the size of a basketball. People can have different types of symptoms such as flu like symptoms, in some cases people go years without knowing they have this disease because it can take years for the swelling to start to occur and make people aware of it. When people develop elephantiasis is due to both the buildup of lymph fluid and the impaired ability of the lymph to fight infections, leaving affected people more susceptible to germs and bacteria. There are several ways you can treat this disease. The ways you can treat it will depend on how far it has progressed such as the drug Diethylcarbamazine that is used to treat the active infections. After elephantiasis has already developed there is no drug to treat it, it can be treated with therapy and hygiene measures to prevent more infection to set in. After hydrocele occurs you can have surgery to help relieve the pressure and the pain that is associated with it. There can be several complications that will arise if it is left untreated such as kidney damage, and swelling of the limbs. The size and weight of the affected body parts can lead to a…
