Film Summary And Film Analysis: The Departed
The Departed is a film centered around organized crime that involves a wide array of characters. With drug deals, shootouts, scandals, and espionage, the movie has many tense scenes that have notable staging, costumes, props and settings. At about fifty-two minutes in, Costigan and French enter a man named Brian’s house to assassinate him. Dressed in dark clothes and with French wearing leather gloves, they are dressed to kill. The setup of the room has two conceivable exits, that are instantly blocked by Costigan and French as they enter. As he is obviously about to be murdered, he is pinned behind a table, with no escape, and regresses to throwing a child’s toy at Costigan. He is panicked and the sense of urgency and distress is showed in his actions. The layout of the room is setup so that the victim is trapped as he approaches death. Not only are they outnumbered by people, but also by firepower. The police are outfitted with bullet proof vests, shotguns, machine guns, and pistols. Most of Costello’s men have pistols, with one shotgun and possibly two machine pistols. It is important to note the setting of the warehouse as well. Costello’s men are blocked on both sides in the warehouse by a pile of rubble and a wall.
There is a trailer blocking the back as well, and when the police show up and block the entrance there is seemingly no escape for the vehicles. With this setup of the warehouse, Costello and his men are cramped in a small area and are subsequently massacred. Again, this creates a sense of claustrophobia and panic as hundreds of bullets are fired into the cars and criminals, as there is nowhere for them to run.
