Film Noir encompasses detectives, femme fatales, love, beautiful cinematography, and snappy dialogue. A famous film involving a detective is The Big Heat. Film Noir uses shadows and dark lighting to heighten the meaning and attitudes of the films. Night of the Hunter uses discreet symbols in different scenes of the film that represent different aspects of the morals of the characters. For example, the main female character in the film is a good, Christian woman; triangles show up in the background of certain scenes to symbolize the Trinity, reminding the audience of her strong Christian faith that will overcome the horrible man trying to take away the children she is watching over. For me, there is nothing I enjoy more (almost) than reviewing indie films. I am one that seeks out those who could benefit from the extra promotion, and although it can be difficult to sometimes squeeze it into my schedule, I am happy to help when I can. And that is exactly how I feel with The Hunt. This is an independent film, and it just so happens that Kyle Smithers, director of this film, was kind enough to give me the chance to review it. And the fact that it stars Rick Ravanello, one of my favorite actors (and people, for that matter), makes this particular review even more gratifying.…

‘Double Indemnity’ (1944, Wilder) is a classic interpretation of a Film Noir. It was set in 1938, when society had not been impacted by the changes in female roles. In opposition, ‘L.A. Confidential’ (1997, Hanson), was set in the 1950s, when the perceptions of women were being altered dramatically, on an upward spiral. ‘L.A. Confidential’ is additionally, considered to be a retro-Noir film, where elements are developed and influenced according to our modern day society. Genre conventions, the level of power the women are given, as well as the elements of narrative, are all significant components when considering the messages and values of women in the two films.…

One of the most influential film movements in the 1940's was a genre that is known today as film noir. Film noir was a recognizable style of filmmaking, which was created in response to the rising cost of typical Hollywood movies (Buss 67). Film noir movies were often low budget films; they used on location shoots, small casts, and black and white film. The use of black and white film stock not only lowered production costs, but also displayed a out of place disposition that the conventions of film noir played upon. It is these conventions: themes, characters, lighting, sound, and composition, which are seen in the movie LA Confidential (Curtis Hanson, 1997). This paper discusses the techniques used in LA Confidential that link the movie with the typical cinematic conventions of the film noir style.…

Crime is a genre that often times follows an often times intelligent, malicious criminal. Sometimes it follows the criminal chronologically and sometimes is follows the criminal through their victims. But simply following this generic guideline does not define a crime movie, there are defining factors that make a crime movie. In order for a crime movie to be effective it must have a criminal with a motive. A criminal and his motive are important for a criminal movie to have because it a lot of times serves as the basis for the movie to build on. The next important criteria is a setting, a proper setting enables the movie to invoke a subliminal feeling before the movie incorporates…

“Basically, they do in different ways what Polanski does in Chinatown: set the elements of a conventional popular genre in an altered context”. Although it doesn’t follow every guideline for a classic film noir film Chinatown is an example of the genre. The film simply takes place in modern times (when it came out). The 1970’s even provides a similar backdrop for the film to that of 1940’s film noir, a major war affecting the country. The film itself contains many key characteristics that noir will always be known for. Some of the characteristics include the style of the film, the femme fatale, and the emphasis of fatalism. I believe that even with some of the drastic differences between classic noir films and this one Chinatown is a modern…
