Film Analysis: Chicago Girl
Depending on where you live, it is safe to say that a majority of people have the right to speak up for their beliefs and defend themselves by calling out those who are oppressing them. However, unlike the United States, where it is the right of all it’s citizens to voice their opinions, there are many countries that put limitations on what can be said and punish those who violate the rules. The United Nations wrote the “Universal Declaration of RIghts” document which lists thirty articles that state the rights that all human beings need to have, including the right to vocalize their opinions freely. Freedom of speech is one of the most crucial rights that anyone can have because it allows them to stand up for people causing injustice to others.

Although they may not witness the suppression of speech being forced upon others, they may have seen it on the news or have read about it in articles. In the documentary “Chicago Girl” the film follows the story of a 19 year old girl that is leading a revolution in Syria against their leader Bashad al-Assad. The film shows the citizen being killed and tortured after standing their ground and demanding to have their rights as human beings. The documentary depicts the hierarchy of the country showing that the citizens are at the bottom with little to almost no rights, while the leaders are at the top and do whatever they want. When a country follows the economic system of communism it comes with some limitations on freedoms of expressing opinions. Even though in this system all people are treated as equals it is also a way for leaders to enforce censorship of topics over the entire nations. This means that if there is no freedom of expression that means that everybody, no matter their rank in social status must follow these rules. According to an article published on the Stanford University website, the author explains how communism works in China and the censorship they have online. Unlike other countries where people can post a blog whenever they want, China receives all publish information and it is carefully examined in order to see if someone is trying to publish an opinion that the government does not agree with or so that the public is unable to see
