Fieldwork Observation
For this fieldwork report, I had the privilege of observing my high school Radio and Broadcasting teacher. I graduated from Piper High School in 2013 and I had Mr. Jon Farley as my Radio and Broadcasting teacher for two years. Radio and Broadcasting provide students with instruction in radio broadcasting and management. Piper High School is one of the few schools that allows students to run a live radio station. According to the course syllabus, “WKPX is a real live radio station broadcasting to all Broward County and part of Dade and Palm Beach with 10,000 plus listeners. The radio program gives students the opportunity to help run a live radio station”.
This very program is broken down into a numerous courses, ranging from introductory courses

Mr. Farley is one of the few teachers who deals with a range of students from diverse racial and educational backgrounds. He has been working at Piper high school for over 30 years, so he has seen the adaptation and changes the school has undergone. Without Mr. Farley the radio station would probably close down and many passionate students would not be happy about it. Mr. Farley stresses the importance of “keeping the peace” with not only his students' but also faculty and staff. After talking to a few students I came to know that many of them feel comfortable around Mr. Farley as he goes out of his way to make sure he puts his students needs first. Mr. Farley is also very passionate about what he does so, he makes it a priority that the radio station is running at full potential and that the students who have been assigned to station managers are the ones who put the safety of the radio station first. However, Mr. Farley still needs to improve his discipline techniques. As the radio station is full of electronic equipment, there were still a few students who were rough housing. Not only is this dangerous for the students, but it may also lead to the destruction of school property. Additionally a major rule that Mr. Farley stressed is to prevent the drawing of graffiti on the counters and equipment. However, many of the counters had pornographic drawings and writing on them. Lastly, as students are encouraged to go on air and be disk jockeys, they are told to refrain from using profanity. Mr. Farley had to tell numerous students to watch their

On 07/24/2015 at approximately while working in the booking area Deputy Caldwell was watching max 1 camera and said that it appeared that the two inmates appeared to be fighting. Sargent Daves, Sargent Coulter and I (Deputy Stearns) could hear people talking loudly behind delta gate and the voices began to get louder. Sgt. Daves began to walk up the hallway with Corporal Moravec towards delta gate calling for the door to be unlocked as they approached the door. Sgt. Coulter and I started towards the hallway to see what was going on behind delta gate in the hall. As we got to delta gate Deputy Caldwell pressed the button once again to unlock the door. This is when I saw Sgt. Daves, Cpl. Moravec, Deputies Robichaux, Delano and Sheldon in the…

The subject of our research topic were homeless people. We had chosen this topic out of curiosity and wonder about the cause behind homelessness. Our hypothesis was that alcohol and drugs play an important role and are the leading cause of homelessness and expected more males or an individual homeless person. To conduct our field research we had gone to The Samaritan Center in Simi Valley and interviewed the homeless people. It was really shocking to see that mostly, the homeless people were families with small children. Upon interviewing them we figured that alcohol and drugs had no connection with their homelessness.…

Observing this toddler has taught me many things. I was able to learn about the different forms of child development and what it looks like. One of the major forms of child development is physical. The child experiences major child development during the first two years of life. During this time the child experiences gross-motor development. The skills obtained from these developments are the ability to run, jump, catch etc. During the observation of the infant I was able to witness some of these developments. For example over the course of my observation I noticed the infant had significantly improved his ability to stand up and sit down on his own. He was struggling when the observation but seemingly got more comfortable doing it over and over again. The walking stared to become natural and more second nature however it was awkward and difficult when the infant just started. The infant also became more comfortable gripping and grasping objects. Another form of development observed was cognitive development. This development includes the ability to think rhetorically and the ability to communicate with others. The child made significant development in this field he was able to learn more words and express his thoughts in an understanding manner. The infant’s ability to play and interact with other children has increased. His memory has increased and is able to remember certain things over time his able to memorize more things and can recognize familiar faces. The final form of physical development is social-emotional development. This stage involves dealing with other children and being able to pay attention to adult figures. The infant is able to obey the adults and other persons in charge. They also become more comfortable at expressing their emotions. The child is also able to learn empathy and…

There are many components to any investigation, but behind any successful investigation there is a well written and detail report that describes every aspect of the crime scene. Field note are one of the most important and essential aspects to any successful investigation and to any finished report. Field notes should encompass the basic information such as name, date and time, and location. The notes should also include any observation of the officer’s surroundings such as, who was at the scene, what was at the scene, descriptions of witnesses, key points in interviews, and anything that sticks out to the officer. Also, the environmental conditions is something that should be observed by the officer. He/she needs to write down any and all…

Today many public schools have pre-kindergarten programs. The children in these programs come from different experiences, backgrounds, and all have different needs. Pre-kindergarten programs give children an advantage to learning prior to kindergarten. I performed my second filed observation at Pinkston Street Elementary School in Henderson, NC. The elementary school is in a rural county and this school has lots of diversity in which there are African-American, Caucasian, and Mexican students. The classroom that I observed is one of four pre-kindergarten classrooms in the school. The elementary school is also one of three of the schools in the county to require…

For field observation assignment part 1 I decided that while waiting for my mother and sister to show, to meet for dinner, I would watch the social setting outside of the restaurant. Unfortunately, they got stuck in a lot of traffic and therefore, I was forced to sit there for a little over an hour. After observing them for an hour, and taking some notes, I was able to determine for the most part that everyone was very happy to be where they are, in that moment.…

My field study was conducted at the Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars (T.A.G.) Middle School located in the East Harlem section of Manhattan. T.A.G. is a selective public school, governed by the NYC Department of Education. It was founded in 1989 as a magnet program within the school system’s District 4, and became an independent K-8 gifted and talented school in 2004. T.A.G. is one of only three gifted and talented programs in New York City. It serves students identified with gifted abilities in grades K-8. Children are admitted to kindergarten through 2nd grade based on their scores on two tests, the Otis-Lennon School Abilities Test (OLSAT) and the Bracken School Readiness Assessment (BSRA). Children whose scores put them in the 97th percentile nationally are eligible. There are a handful of seats open in the upper grades. Middle school admission is based on grades, standardized test scores and teacher recommendations. There are approximately 500 students comprised mainly of African-American, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern backgrounds, reportedly only 2% of the student body is Caucasian. Each grade level has two classes of up to 25 students each. The school is located in a building that houses four other mini schools, a common practice in schools these days. For instance the high school I attended has been divided into five different high schools.…

When an anthropologist takes under the task of doing fieldwork he or she is taking on an overwhelming amount of obstacles one must overcome in order to record accurate information regarding a specific civilization. He or she must overcome many obstacles such as language, race and culture in order to even start a study on a specific culture. In the films "Shock of the Other" and "Margaret Mead and Samoa" we, as the viewer get to see how these fieldworks are done from a perspective myself, as a student, have never gotten to see before. In both of these films quite "famous" anthropologists the first, Margaret Mead, an American journeyed to the South Pacific territory of Samoa in 1925 to do her fieldwork. The other anthropologist David Maybury-Lewis who was born in Hyderabad, Pakistan in 1929 and immigrated to the United States in 1960 was the primary anthropologist in the film "Shock of the Other" traveled to the Amazon River Basin in order to study the drastically primitive civilizations such as the MaschoPiro who basically remain hidden from the outside world.…

In the classroom, students are walking around without asking for permission, and leaving the classroom whenever they want. This behavior is unacceptable because during an emergency, the teacher won’t know where the student(s) are and that is dangerous. Students aren’t following instructions and calling out in class and being too loud. This behavior is unacceptable because if there is a lockdown or a time when the class are outside, and there is an emergency and they have to get inside, but if they are too loud, we won’t hear instructions and we could get into trouble/danger or if there is an important announcement it might not be heard. On the bus students are screaming. This is unacceptable behavior because if there was an emergency vehicle with sirens on, or a fast moving vehicle honking, the bus driver won’t be able to hear it and then he/she could get into an accident. Another unacceptable behavior is throwing balls around the bus. If the ball hits the bus driver and sent them unconscious it could result in over 50 kids either killed or hurt.…

I am sitting at the back corner of the library, looking out the window. The trees outside are brown. Most of the leaves have already fallen. Birds on the branches are easy to observe. Some of them are flying in ranks in the sky. Sunshine passes through the glass and warms my face. The sunshine is soft and it makes me feel warm all over. When I am concentrating on the view outside, a short white boy in oversized red shirt and black cap hums as he paces towards me. He sits next to me, opens his book and reads out the words. I decide to leave that sunny corner and walk towards the study desks.…

School is a place where students go to learn. Each student should have the opportunity to develop the skills of problem solving in a nonviolent manner. Educators should have in mind the students culture. Instead of labeling them as trouble-makers, give them a chance to learn how to cope, and deal with problems by teaching them the steps to take. There has to be some consistent ways of solving these problems. Not with the punishments approaches that some school takes, but by solving practices and the implementation of respect, fairness, and discipline.…
