Springport, MI- 17 Springport FFA members attended the National FFA Convention from Monday, October 23-27. Throughout the week students went on career success tours, educational tours, attended a Rascal Flatts concert, a rodeo, the career and college fair, the FFA Mall, listened to motivational speeches in sessions, and so much more.

Carson Chambers, a greenhand member who attended convention shared his experience on the trip, “My favorite part of the trip was going through the Career and College Expo at the convention center, as well as going to Fair Oaks Farm.     It made me excited for the presenters that they had such an attentive audience, and made the vibe of the entire conference that much more comforting. I was a little disappointed at how little some of the presenters explained their topics; they were only given 20 minutes, which might have had something to do with it, but it would have been helpful to outsiders to explain their topics in depth, so that you didn’t need to be a music graduate student to understand the papers. Overall, I would like to choose different topics to attend if I were to attend this again. One topic that stood out to me was Steven Moon’s Listening Elsewhere: Enacting Affective Exodus in Gay Azerbaijan and if I had gotten their earlier I would have loved to attend that presentation. One thing attending this conference has inspired me to do is to attend more lectures on music and sound studies if they are offered in the Twin Cities…

    The event that I attended was a lecture and book signing by David Margolick, the author of Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock. The well-organized event was sponsored by the writing center. David Margolick summarized his experience with Elizabeth and Hazel, and his process of writing the book. Margolick also urged the audience to take action and try to encourage a movement such as emailing president Barack Obama, to make Elizabeth and Hazel reconcile and become friends again.     Over the course of Quarter, I composed more than a few FRQs. Throughout my many in-class essays, I learned not only about rhetorical analysis, but also some tendencies I have as a writer. In all four of my essays, the most prominent trend I exemplified was a lack of focus on certain pieces of my analysis. Often, I would provide a strong analysis of certain evidence, but then would begin to stray from my original point. Occasionally, my sentences proved nothing, such as when I wrote that, “This major depiction of the two vastly different sides of the soldier’s lives makes the men seem more real and human”.     Concert at Grandfather Mountain Campgrounds

    The concert was amazing, very chill and relaxed setting. The weather was perfect the entire weekend with mild temperature and plenty of sunshine. The festival was not extremely crowded, bathrooms and tent grounds had plenty of room. Camped on Grandfather Mountain Campgrounds, a truly badass place at the base of the mountain. An icon of Western North Carolina, Grandfather soars to almost 6,000 feet in elevation, a major peak in the Blue Ridge. No problems throughout the festival, ran smoothly. Railroad Earth killed it every night, great lights and awesome sound. Energy of the crowd was amazing, everybody had high spirits. Nobody at the festival missed Railroad Earth when they came out to play. A band I knew very little about blew me away. One of my favorite bands now from the MOMT 2012. Railroad Earth is the ultimate highlight of the festival, three days of them was almost not enough. Dr. Dog played on friday, awesome band. They started the festival off right giving the crowd great energy. One of my favorite bands at the concert, brought plenty of people in front of the stage to dance. Dr. Dog and Futurebirds sounded different than most of the other bands. The other bands had more of a bluegrass sound. Dr. Dog and Futurebirds sounded more rock, both very good. Futurebirds struck me as a little grunge with great sound. The flag hanging off one of Futurebirds guitars was awesome. The food was awesome, pizza and quesadillas become a favorite of mine. A small amount of food vendors, small tents with clothing and hammocks for sale. Oh yeah, No BEER tent. Strange thing for a music festival to have no alcohol for sale. The mood of the festival was very relaxed and chill. People lounging around on the grass with plenty of room to listen to great music. Cooking and camping outside of the stage area was a fun time. Get to the festival early if you want a secluded camp spot! Great weekend that I will never…
