Equal Military Opportunity The concept of women in combat has existed since humanity. However, a woman physically fighting on the battlefront has not. The physical and emotional makeup of women has been looked upon to determine the outcome of allowing women to fight for their country’s freedom. A reason to exclude women in combat roles should be non-existent. The characteristics of women have been put in comparison with those of men. Femininity has been analyzed as a sign of weakness, kindness, and emotionality, whereas male characteristics comprise of toughness, power, and aggressiveness. Although, there are women incapable of the physical requirements related with military service, there are some men that are just as equally unskilled as women when considering the physical and mental hardships of military life (“Women”). Women should be given an opportunity to show their abilities before assumptions are made by others. Making assumptions and knowing the truth are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum. Women and men often have different points of view that can potentially be very accessible in combat (“Women”). Men can be seen as strong and capable of many things, but not all men are physically tough or mentally strong enough to fight successfully in combat based on their appearance. Military training such as muscle building and other types of training can always strengthen a woman to fight in combat (“Eight Major”). Another phenomenon that is often not even considered is that battles of the 21st century are not fought with swords and fists. Battles are mainly mechanized by technology (“Eight Major”). Therefore, women in various combat positions are just as capable as men with formality. The same aspect is brought up when it is said that a soldier has to be physically fit, emotionally strong, and should have the mental strength to be in combat (“Eight Major”). As hard as it may be for some to believe, there are women everywhere who grow up with the dream of picking up a firearm and defending their country’s freedom (“Women”). The military administers them with the opportunity to defend their country by fighting in combat. The number of women willing to fight for their country in combat is increasing. In reality, anyone can do anything they set their minds to. Therefore, men as well as women should both be given an equal opportunity to fight for their country’s freedom. Valid points conclude that men and women should be treated equally without question. Our country, being the land of the free and the home of the brave, denying this basic right goes against those beliefs. Supporting this view about women in combat can help remove gender discrimination and help how women fighting in combat are looked upon in the future. Works Cited
