Are you scared of the dark? Well you shouldn't be afraid of me,I mean I am not that scary,I never wanted to be entirely, although the kids don't understand me,they never will. Although, the peculiar thing is,I remember this one kid about 8 years old,he lived in Great Britain, who was so scared of me he would wet his diapers, yes I said diapers, with fright of being even near me. Then in one night he got over his fear. Now I know what you are thinking,"What!? Only in a single night?". Yeah,I thought that too. Well if I am telling you this I might as well tell you the whole story right? Right. So, it was summer over there in Great Britain, about 9:00 pm. I was just going around there spreading darkness and,you know, doing my job. Then I was in this …show more content…
"Also can you help me turn back on my nigh light?" he said, the dad said"What monster?" and Jeremy said,"The darkness monster" he says in a "duh" voice."Son,there is no such thing as a darkness monster" his dad says. Man,is it "offend the darkness" day or what? "Of course there is dad,he lurks in the darkness waiting for his next victim which is me" he says pointing to himself. "Jeremy,if there was a "monster" wouldn't he have gotten us by now?",the kid thinks about this and replies softly"I guess not". "So Jeremy you don't need to worry, darkness is a thing not some living being that will come and get you". Well I guess that is true,I can't grab anybody I can only blind them with darkness and that doesn't do much while they get used to it. "I guess...I guess there is no "monster" that exists is there Dad?",he says looking at his dad. "No,there is no monster that exists in this world" he says looking happy that his son finally understands,"So"his dad continues"you want me to fix that night light?" he says walking in the direction of Jeremy's bedroom,"No" Jeremy responds looking off into the distance"I want to sleep tonight without them". "Are you sure" his dad says,"Positive" Jeremy replies confidently.

The second major chapter in the book was “Fear”. In the 2nd chapter of Disinherited, Thurman takes up the issue of fear. In his 1940’s context, he is speaking about Jim Crow segregation. He argues that segregation is a form of organized violence against the soul of the disinherited. This also has a connection back to Jesus where he was in the segregated minority. People have always lived under the culture of fear, and it characterizes our American culture today. In our society fear is everything, left fears right, rich fears poor, human beings fear the things they don’t understand. As readers it really seems apparent that Thurman is pointing out his own connection to his theme. That he too is apart of the disinherited, and that his own point…

Television came out in the 1950’s, but being born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico electricity was still rare there. But my dad was privileged to live in the biggest house in the city, at the time. “We used candles until I was 8.” My dad smiles as he remembers the times when he would sit the table with his siblings exchanging scary stories. “They would say if you would go out into the woods at night by yourself you would see this devil-like creature that had one horse foot, and a big hat. But since I was the most daring, I went out one night, five blocks away from home, to try to find it but my mother came out and found me and dragged me by my ear all the way home.” “I was raised in a Catholic oriented home, that meant I had to put god first before anything else.
