Fathers Reading Benefits
The Benefits of Fathers Reading to Their Children:
Tips for Fatherhood Programs and Dads
Reading is an essential activity that is linked to children’s cognitive development, academic skills, and future employment opportunities. Children often become interested in reading by watching and mimicking their parents or participating in child-parent reading routines. Although mothers have a big role to play, research shows that fathers are particularly influential for children’s language and literacy development, which means they are a promising point of intervention for efforts to improve children’s language and literacy. Reading together and engaging in other literacy activities, such as telling stories, are things that fatherhood programs can promote to help fathers model positive

7. Create opportunities for fathers to bring their children with them to program activities and engage them in activities where children and fathers can practice their reading skills and enjoy shared reading in a fun and stimulating environment.
Partner with early childhood programs or schools to create activity nights or other opportunities for fathers to interact with their children. For example, programs such as Strong Fathers Strong Families and Reel Fathers work with Head Start programs and elementary schools to offer after-school activities where fathers and children can spend time together.

Children will get excited if the room is welcoming and child-friendly, and dads will feel their children’s

The starting point for this work is to ensure that you have a good relationship with parents. This is important because if parents do not trust their child's key person or do not enjoy working with them, they are less likely to take on board their advice and suggestions. It is also important that you show a good understanding of parents own strengths and interests and acknowledge what some parents already do at home. In addition, we also need to think about barriers that might make it difficult for parents, such as having several young children or working long hours. Recognising these barriers should help us to…

I would share parents on parents night based on the four principles of child development to show how a child grows overtime, developmental needs in an American classroom to show how a child establish and to create patterns by scheduling, children’s physical needs to show how a child can stay healthy and active, how schools use time to show how a typical school runs, grouping students to show how school teachers cooperatively work with their school students into groups and a cultural and linguistic diversity to show different places of the world of where the child is from. Finally, this Yardsticks book by Chip Wood would be absolutely a valuable and worthwhile purchase for their home library because it will make parents to understand and read…

In the article “Their teacher can't be an app: Preschoolers' listening comprehension of digital storybooks”, Kathleen A. Paciga, discusses the effects that digital storybooks can have on children from low income families or families where the parents may have lower literacy or in which English is not the parents first language. Paciga looks at how children at risk of reading failure aren’t necessarily not listening to their teachers or not trying, but at how they may just not have the same availability of someone to read and practice with them at home. Due to this, she also studies the effects that digital storybooks in the home can have on reading skills in these families. In this article review, I will note the important findings and correlations between students at risk for failing and the…

Fathers are often left out of research, as society focuses mainly on mothers and their roles in the parent-child relationship. If research is done, the research surrounds fathers who belong to the middle- and upper-class. The article entitled “Father Involvement in Urban Low-Income Fathers: Baseline Associations and Changes Resulting From Preventive Intervention” examines father involvement among ethnically diverse, low-income fathers. The goals of the research consist of filling the gaps of the literature, by studying a different population, and evaluating if whether attendance of workshops that concentrate on communication, coping, and parenting skills within this population will affect the ways in which fathers contribute to rearing children (Reinks et al., 2011).…

Over the course of many years’ fathers are becoming more absent in their children's lives, for example “One out of every three children in America lives in a home without their biological father present” (Promoting Responsible Fatherhood,2012, pg2). This very alarming because research has shown that father present in a child life has more positive effects such as helping…

For years maternity leave has been a benefit that has been provided for mothers-to-be by employers and companies. However, there are not too many companies that provide the same benefit to fathers-to-be. Companies should offer paternity leave for expectant fathers. By offering paternity leave for fathers-to-be companies allow fathers to be a benefit of paid or unpaid time off work to care for their child, make arrangements for the child’s welfare, and preparation for the adoption of a child.…

Lee (2010) used background information about the importance of parental and teacher influence on literacy development and motivation for reading and the importance of the relationship between parents and teachers to develop a new study. This study aimed to determine if reading with parents during morning drop-off times at a child-care facility eases transitions while simultaneously fostering literacy development. Additionally, Lee investigated how this impacted the relationship between teachers and parents.…

As addressed by President Obama in his 2008 Father’s Day speech, getting father’s back into the business of nurturing children is highly applaudable. Like a symbolic interactionism, family itself is a symbol, not an objective, concrete reality. As interactionist, I am of the opinion that fathers and mothers should work together despite being a family of procreation to construct a family for the emotional well-being, social skills, and intellectual growth of the children which will greatly bring about a rise in the achievement gap hence pushing the effects of deprivation and isolation out of the Black communities.…

I would like to mention that for my parents, especially for my dad, reading has always been a favorite hobby. Partly due to this fact, I have always received positive emotions while reading. If both of one of the parents often read, the likelihood that their child will want to receive positive emotions from this activity is very high. On the other hand, if parents do not read but require a child to read too much, the reading can become a field of resistance between the child and his or her parents. Reading has always been an easy and pleasant leisure for my parents. I am immensely grateful to my father who was an influential literacy sponsor and still has the biggest impact on me. I am used to see my dad who is a cardiologist working on his own development and expanding his knowledge in many fields. We have a family tradition to read a science book every month and later discuss some of its points together. I find such kind of pastime to be truly useful and…

Stories about the effects of absent fathers are frequent and findings have shown major and overwhelming effects on children (Sieber, 2008). The number of African American female-headed households has continually increased over the past ten years, despite fatherhood being characterized as one of the most valuable components of a male’s life (Fleck, Hudson, Abbott & Reisbig, 2013). Statistics from 2011 show that fatherlessness affects children in the following ways: 90% of homeless children are fatherless; 85% of fatherless children have behavior disorders; 30% are at a higher risk for teen pregnancy; 40% repeat a grade in school; 71% drop out of school; 75% are drug users; and 85% are in correctional facilities (Osborne & McLanahan,…
