Father Saka Gambling Case Study
A Catholic priest from Ontario, Canada has reportedly confessed to losing US$380,000 (CA$500,000) meant for refugee sponsorship to gambling.
Police are investigating Father Amer Saka of the St. Joseph Chaldean Catholic Church in London, Ontario after he told his bishop Emanuel Shaleta that he had gambled more than US$380,000 (CA$500,000). The said fund was originally intended for refugee sponsorship, according to The Toronto Star.
On Feb. 23, the Catholic priest reportedly called Shaleta and said he lost the money to gambling. Although they suspect that Father Saka is hooked to this vice, they still cannot confirm if what he said is true.
“He called me on the phone and . . . said he lost all the money. I said, ‘How?’ He said, ‘Gambling,’” Shaleta told The Star over the weekend. “We believe that Father Saka has a serious gambling problem and that these funds may have been used for that purpose. Since there is an investigation going on, we cannot confirm what he’s saying.”

The following day, he checked the priest into a non-profit facility called Southdown Institute for voluntary treatment for his addiction, the report details.
On Feb. 24, London police received a complaint regarding alleged financial misappropriation at Chaldean church. So far, no charges have been filed and the allegations against Father Saka have not yet been proven in court, Religion News reports.
Monsignor Murray Kroetsch, chancellor of the diocese that manages the refugee program, said Saka headed the group in charge of raising funds to sponsor Iraqi refugees. Sponsorship costs around US$6,000 per refugee. Kroetsch said only 10 out of the 20 applications filed have arrived in Ontario, and the diocese has to fill in for the financial cost for the rest of the incoming refugees.
Shaleta said Catholic priests should not gamble because it is against the

According to Lamar E. Cooper Sr, "The Bible teaches that we are to live by our own work, not by the exploitation of others." He also states that, "Gambling is not an investment in anything; it is a simple win/lose proposition in which the winner takes all and the loser forfeits all." If commercial casinos are legalized in Ohio, the 11 proposed sites for land- based casinos would generate an estimated 610 million in tax revenue on winnings, of the estimated 610 million received in taxed revenue, some will go towards rehabilitation and education for problem gamblers. Contrary to Cooper, gambling is an investment were the loser ends up winning in the long run through education and rehabilitation and also the winner doesn't take all because their winnings will be taxed. Also by legalizing commercial casinos we will be living by our own work, because the proposed 11 casinos would create an additional 85,000 jobs in Ohio which in turn means more revenue going to the state of Ohio through income taxes. Also giving the workers the opportunity to spend money they worked for, within our states casinos instead of going out of state to…

The possible occurrence of another big win is most likely a reason why I still continue this habit. However the continuation of this habit could be even deeper than the possible occurrence of another big win, and this is due to the fact that I am not satisfied with my economical status. Somewhere in the corners of my mind I feel that I am destined to obtain great wealth, but I have tried to stop gambling on several occasions. Usually there are several distinct phases of this addiction:the winning phase, the losing phase and the desperation phase(Benassu, 2011). I have unfortunately experienced all of these phases, and all though I have not quit my interactions with gambling have been limited.…
