Racial profiling is a phenomenon which causes people of certain races to be presumed as a criminal - in the light of the law, or simply a worthless person - in the eyes of the society. In her essay "Is Ethnic Profiling Justified Under Threat of Terrorism?", dr. Huma Abbasi makes it clear by giving an example of the mistreatment of the blacks, which has been present in the US since the country was born. From the very beginning of the United States' existence, black people had a hard time living in the New World. As slaves, they were treated as a property, not people, and they were not given any rights. The color of their skin alone and nothing more signified their poor status and low value. Although many years have passed since their long struggle - first against slavery, then against discrimination and segregation - and the blacks finally achieved equality, the prejudice against African Americans is still strongly rooted in American mentality. According to Abbasi, when it comes to criminality, African Americans are most likely to be the suspects just because they have appeared in the wrong place at the wrong time. Abbasi states that "every year, hundreds of innocent African-American motorists are stopped and searched on highways by law enforcement on suspicion of drug or gun possession, an assumption of guilt based…

The only way to keep racial profiling to a minimum is to be well informed as a community, and to know one’s rights as an individual. Racial profiling is a big issue. Many people have been victimized because of cops and other high authorities’ senseless attitudes on how to handle the law. What people have to realize is that racial profiling does happen to innocent people who are mostly targeted or pursued because of their race or sometimes even because of their religion. These things can also cause citizens to become very angry and unwilling to cooperate with law enforcement. Racial profiling has been the cause of many outbreaks of riots. There has even been many riots because of innocent people being racial profiled against; causing citizens to become antagonistic, bitter, and hateful towards the law. Back in the 1960s, African Americans were promised that the United States of America would no longer judge people by the color of their skin. Today, nearly fifty years later, the issue of double standards pertaining to race and ethnicity still remains quite controversial. One of the many ways the problem manifests itself is the practice of racial profiling, which is “any arbitrary police-initiated action based on race, ethnicity, or natural origin rather than a person’s behavior.”1 In an attempt to fight the war on drugs, or, more recently, on terrorism, federal and local governments are searching for more effective policies, which can have unintended racial consequences. Racial profiling happens to be one of them. More specifically,…
