Fashion throughout the decades
Fashion throughout the Decades
Interest: I chose to look at fashion and how it has changed and developed through the decades. Fashion up until the 1960’s varied widely. The 1960’s specifically were known as the “Flower Power” era, or the hippie movement. One of the social youth groups preceding the Flower Power era was referred to as the rockers. The rockers were a group of younger generations who typically wore black clothing such as leather jackets. Their style is echoed in greatly in the idea of punk rock and originated in Europe. In America there was almost retaliation with the fashion here. The hippie movement served as the new type of fashion here in America. Tie-dyed shirts and bell-bottom jeans became extremely popular and were the exact opposite of the previous style in Britain. During the 1970’s things changed again. People everywhere became crazed with disco. Because of the fascination with the disco dancing, the use of polyester became very popular. People began desiring tighter clothing in the 1970’s and polyester was able to be not only tight, but also stretchy. Polyester also shone under the lights seen at discos. The style truly was very flashy, gaudy, and at some times was seen as pompous. During the late 1970’s however, punk fashion became popular, almost in reaction to the “Saturday night fever,” attire. Punk fashion was seen as “anti-fashion.” In the 1980’s the economy was great. People suddenly found themselves with more money and with everyone wealthier, the trend in the 1980’s changed greatly and many things became popular all at once. Women wearing shoulder pads, miniskirts, and leg warmers were all very common during the 1980’s. Jewelry such as large earrings became very popular at the time, and to go along with the “gothic punk” fashion trend that was also present, fingerless gloves were also popular during the 1980’s. Parachute pants, member only jackets, and one-size fits all clothing called “units,” were also very popular. High

The counter - Culture decade was a decade of huge change in the fashion industry, and every item produced was intended to challenge the social dress norms of the conservative previous decade. The youth of the time also would wear these unusual pieces to encourage leading issues like sexual liberality and often hippies would dress in colour and mixed gender clothing in support of peace and freedom. The 1960s was an important decade for fashion because it was the first time in history that clothing was geared towards the youth market; and by evaluating the trends of today, it is evident that they are popular with or aimed at a similar market. An example of a leading piece that was released was the iconic mini skirt, with a hem line of 6-7 inches above the knee. The fashion trend took off and just about all teenage girls were wearing them. This fashion statements mirrored how society was changing. Mini fashion items reflected these changes, a skirt had been developed from the mid-calved length of the 1950’s to mid-thigh length in the 60’s, as each adaptation was made to skirts, the fashion item became more and more daring. The mini fashion, and less reactionary fashion of the 60’s has influenced modern society hugely. Crop tops, Body suits, denim short etc. which more extensively would have challenged the 50’s have…

Also one major producer of clothes Hallmark introduced paper dresses, and also made plates, gift wrap, napkins, and placemats with the same pattern as the dress for a complete party theme”(“Trends of the mid-1960’s”). The 1940s and 1950s were times of war. In the 1940s, fabric and other materials were incredibly scarce due to wartime. Fabric had a number of uses in war and as for the public, there were ration cards for a set amount of material one is allowed to purchase. That amount dropped drastically as the war continued. This created shorter skirts than ever and short, blocky jackets (History of 20th Century Women’s Clothing). However, with the war over and the mid-50s approaching, designers had grown tired of the minimalistic clothing during the war and form-fitting clothing came back in with elegantly-made outfits that demanded accessories.…

For women, the trends were art deco designs, “the boyish 'garconne' look and adoption of male clothing”, casual styles worn during the day, cloche hats and bobbed hairstyles, and fringed flapper dresses. These trends came during a time of modernism. Women wanted to become more sophisticated, unrestricted, and casual after the Victorian era. For men, the fashion trends were based off a prosperous era of women wanting to see men in modern clothes. This was because they wanted to see them in more “fashionable clothes that reflected their prosperity and position in society.” The fashion trends for men in the 1920s were the introduction to sportswear, formal styles of clothing, casual styles of clothing, and the “Zoot suit.” Informal wear during this time became popular because it was influenced by art movements that conveyed the “modern” look. Formal evening wear became popular because it was worn in Hollywood movies. The 1920s in America experienced a fashion boom when Consumerism and mass advertising began to…
