Like thousands of others in southern Germany in the late 19th century, Karl and Anna Schmeiser worked long, hard days farming a baron’s vast tracts of land to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. The baron owned the land, the draft animals, the equipment, and most of the crop—more or less as barons before him had since the Middle Ages. Also like thousands, Karl and Anna dreamed of a better life, and in 1890 they scraped together every last pfennig and left Germany forever, taking ship to the United States. Seeking cheap land and independence, they eventually moved northward to the prairies of western Canada, settling in Saskatchewan in 1904.

A century later, the land is no longer so cheap. The independence Karl and Anna found is threatened too, as grandson Percy Schmeiser and his wife Louise discovered in 1998. That’s when Monsanto Corporation sued them after their canola seed was found to contain the company’s patented, herbicide-resistant genes.* The case generated worldwide headlines, and an uncertain future for many farmers. Although the Schmeisers ultimately didn’t have to pay Monsanto, the courts did find them guilty of patent infringement. The fact that a transnational corporation would persecute small farmers is troubling to many, and shows the depth and breadth of a decades-long transformation: the steady erosion of farmers’ practice of developing and saving seeds. “Neither I nor my parents or grandparents ever envisioned farmers losing control of their seed,” Schmeiser says.

Moreover, that’s just the tip of the canola stalk. The privatization of seed is but one part of the steady consolidation of economic power throughout agriculture. Large agro-industrial and retail corporations have now secured toeholds in every phase of the farming cycle: they own seed and seed patents, they control processing facilities, they dominate the retail sector, and they have even moved into financing farmers’ operations.     While there are questions of Monsanto’s ethical practices, the success of producing genetically modified seeds is irrefutable. While GM seeds are profitable, the disputes that these seeds have the potential to harm plants and animals are ongoing. As previously stated Monsanto’s seeds are resistant to its own herbicide, Roundup. With this in mind, the seed’s composition includes the chemical glyphosate, an ingredient of Roundup. According to Scientific American (2009), glyphosate “amplifies the toxic effect on human cells—even at concentrations more much diluted than those used on farms and lawns”, and that other ingredients in Roundup may negatively impact pregnant women and their fetuses(Gammon).     At the beginning of this case it breifly explains when Monsanto was founded which was in 1901 by John F. Queeny in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew this company to be one of the world's largest seed companies today. They first started out producing artificial sweeteners called saccharine, which was sold to Coca-Cola back when Monsanto was still becoming big. Monsanto also sold caffeine extract and vanillin, which was an artificial vanilla flavoring that Coca-Cola also bought from them. During World War I Monsanto saw an opportunity to grow into the chemical industry and started specializing in plastics, its own agricultural chemicals, and synthetic rubbers. A few years later, Monsanto created its first ever Roundup herbicide that would later take the company to the top. Although Monsanto has found a way to keep crops from becoming eaten or killed from insects by their Roundup herbicide, it has also become a huge consumer issue. With Monsanto genetically modifying seeds to insure they grow quicker and healthier than standard crops, people are starting to wonder whether or not these seeds are bad for our environment or even the people and animals consuming them. Monsanto has had a lot of lawsuits against them consisting of one from Dupont, which is another leader in the seed distribution industry. The alligation was brought up from the American Antitrust Institute for alleged anticompetitve activities.     Clarence Thomas was a Monsanto lawyer from 1976-1979, then he became a Supreme Court justice and allowed Monsanto to patent the soybean seed. In 1996, Monsanto began selling Roundup ready soybeans. In 1996 about 2% of soybeans in the US where from Monsanto, by 2008 90% of soybeans in the US where Monsanto’s seeds. Monsanto owns these seed which means a farmer cannot clean the seeds to reuse them the next year. The company employs about 75 people to watch farmers to make sure they don’t reuse the seeds.     In order to be able to sell food cheaper we have begun adding chemicals like GMOs and pesticides to our crops and containing our animals through the use of AFOs. Over the past century American agriculture has dramatically changed due to the fact that small, commercial farms are finding it harder and harder to compete with large-scale (mostly indoor) animal feeding operations (AFOs). Agricultural occupations such as farming often do not offer economic prosperity, thus pushing workers to seek financial advances. Many farmers look to GMOs and AFOs because they provide an easier way to gain surplus in the product. Pesticides and steroids are examples, as they alter growth providing larger products faster. Knowing these practices have major negative effects, farmers still use these outlets as a means to gain advantage over other competitors. Centner sees a worsening situation, as individual farmers are finding it necessary to alter their practices and hurting the environment for financial reasons. An example of this is the new terminator gene spoken of on pg. 86, which is said to be more harmful to the environment than helpful.
