RESEARCH PLAN

A. RESEARCH QUESTION

In households, there are termites that cause problems such as destroying our things but the available solution is very costly so we come with this research that aims to terminate termites in a cheaper way. The study determines the effectiveness of beechwood fruit (gmelina arborea) as a termite terminator.
It will answer the following questions:
1. Does phytochemical analysis of beechwood fruit supports its termicidal property?
2. Is beechwood fruit (gmelina arborea) extract effective as termite terminator?
3. Is there significant difference between the commercially available termicide and the beechwood fruit termite terminator?

A. GOALS/ EXPECTED OUTCOMES
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
The study aims to make a termicide out of beechwood fruit (gmelina arborea)
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
1. To conduct phytochemical analysis of beechwood fruit.
2. To test the effectiveness of beechwood fruit (gmelina arborea) in killing termites?
3. To identify the significant difference between the beechwood fruit (gmelina arborea) termite terminator and the commercially available termicide.
HYPOTHESIS:
1. Phytochemical analysis of beechwood fruit (gmelina arborea) supports its termicidal property.
2. Beechwood fruit (gmelina arborea) termite terminator is effective in killing termites.
3. There is no significant difference between the commercially available termicide and beechwood fruit (gmelina arborea) termite terminator.

B. METHODOLOGY This study aims to terminate termites by the use of beechwood fruit (gmelin aarborea). We will use experimental methods to test the beechwood fruit using three groups of same number

Blackworms (Lumbriculus variegatus) were used in this experiment to study the effects of secondary plant compounds, chemical compounds produced by plants that are not part of the general metabolism, on pulse rate. Secondary plant compounds act as defense mechanisms which reduce or eliminate consumption of some plant species or even attract predators. These compounds are not essential to the plant but often benefit the plant by having harmful effects on animals. These deterrents can include toxins, increased volume of urine, or even affect water balance but they include a wide variety of physiological consequences (Dearing et al, 2002).…

The most common and economically important wood-destroying organisms in the United States are Subterranean Termites (Reticulitermes flavipes). Termites feed on materials that contain cellulose, primarily dead wood and wood by-products. Subterranean termites are social insects that live in colonies that may contain hundreds of thousands of individuals. Each termite colony contains three forms or castes, which are the workers, soldiers, and reproductives (Picture # 1).These castes are physically distinct and perform different tasks in the termite society. Workers are about 1/8 inch long and are blind, wingless, soft-bodied, creamy white to grayish-white with a round head. Workers are the most numerous individuals in a termite colony, and they are the termite caste that actually eats the wood. These sterile individuals forage for food and water, construct and repair shelter tubes, feed and groom other termites, care for eggs and young, and participate in colony defense. Soldiers are also wingless and resemble workers except that they have a large, rectangular, yellowish-brown head with large mandibles (jaws). The soldiers’ primary function is colony defense. Male and female reproductives can be winged (primary) or wingless (neotenic). Each can produce new offspring. Winged primary…

For this experiment to effectively there must be a set of five controls and one variable to test all possible variables on the effectiveness of the herbicide or bag method. The experimental group will be a stump that will be cut six inches from the ground, sprayed with herbicide and covered with three garbage bags to prevent exposure to air and sunlight, the bottom of the bag will be sealed with duct tape. The second honey suckle bush, the first control group, will use bag method independent of the herbicide. This bush will be cut six inches from the ground and wrapped with three garbage bags and sealed with duct tape. The next group will test sunlight exposure and its effect on the stump that’s been treated with herbicide. Two honeysuckle bushes that face towards the east will be needed for this experiment. Both bushes will be cut six inches from the ground. One will be treated with herbicide and the remaining will not. Finally, the last set of controls will need two honey suckle bushes that face towards the west. These bushes will also be cut six inches from the ground. One will be treated with the herbicide and one will not. Let the experiment run for 8 weeks. Remove the bags and document the growth on each of the respective stumps. Leave uncovered and return in two weeks to determine if any new growth has…

Glyphosate is the most common herbicide sprayed on GMO crops. It has a very low acute toxicity; with a median lethal dose of 10,000mg/kg, or over one and three quarters pounds of glyphosate for an average weight human. Furthermore, both independent and EU investigations showed no evidence of ill health effects in humans under normal conditions. Herbicide is designed to kill plants not people. If herbicide doesn't hurt people, do the crops that produce insecticides hurt people?…

Government studies indicated that long-term environmental risk from Malathion application was unlikely because the pesticide degrades to harmless materials rapidly after application. These findings come from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, (2005, Section 1). There could be 90 cases of Malathion-related illnesses from the proposed application program. But there could be many more without the application. Malathion applications can be controlled safely. But the mosquito population would prove to be harder without the…

Neonicotinoids are a widely used group of nicotine-related insecticides. Largely used in agriculture, neonicotinoids help protect and maintain crops, especially in Canada and the United States. Although still used for crops today, neonicotinoids have been thought to have significant effects on certain bug populations (Whitehorn, O’Connor, Wackers & Goulson, 2012). Considering this, it is questionable on their overall effects on the environment, and more specifically, on bees. Neonicotinoids also affect other species of bugs, but the impact on bees must be focused on as their environmental impact is the greatest. The overall impact is not only related to bees, but also towards their role in an ecosystem and how that influences our economy and…
