Discuss the way family life has changed over a period of time
This essay explores the change in family life over time. The meaning of family or traditional family is considered to be a group a basic social unit consisting of parents and children, whether dwelling or not. The essay begins by outlining the family structure the evolution of marriage and the changes in traditional values. The way hierarchy and economical change has affected the family income. And the way technology has advanced over the years through media and communication. This section focuses on how family structure has changed over 50 years. Marriage in the past has been seen as a union of two people safeguarding their sexual advances just for each other. Marriage is now seen as medieval practice as a modern family now make-up of couples living together outside of wedlock. Marriage figures have dropped in recent years whilst the rise in divorce and separation of families are on the rise, which have created more lone parent families. 'There were around 128,500 divorces in England and Wales in 2007 (a rate of 11.9 divorcing people per 1,000 married population) ' from policy exchange. The positive outcomes are that laws have been published such as marriage, child protection, equal rights and parental rights. Partners outside of wedlock have equal share of property in an event of a separation. The postponement of marriage is also due to education becoming a high priority as individuals are more career minded, the relaxation of sex has increased cohabitation. 'Between 1996 and 2006 the number of married couple families fell by over 4%, while the number of cohabiting couple families increased by 2.3 million, representing 14% of all families ' from policy exchange.
